Maryland Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services photo by Ben Giroux.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) teamed up with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somd.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Special Olympics Maryland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to teach survival techniques for an active shooter scenario to Special Olympics athletes at a Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions program in Sykesville on July 17.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NRP\u2019s training division presented its Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) course as part of a \u201cUnified Leadership opportunity,\u201d for Special Olympics athletes and staff. Maryland DNR photo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSpecial Olympics Maryland has enjoyed an incredible relationship with law enforcement since the inception of the Law Enforcement Torch Run back in 1986,\u201d Special Olympics Maryland President and CEO Jim Schmutz said. \u201cThis course exemplifies the commitment from law enforcement to creating a more inclusive world. To recognize and embrace the need for helping our athletes be prepared for an active shooter scenario speaks to looking beyond the field of play to support the holistic development of our athletes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The training emphasizes the strategy of &#8220;avoid, deny, defend&#8221; using role-playing through practical scenarios, as officers presented the training and answered situational and follow-up questions from the athletes. Athletes participated in two scenarios, first demonstrating what to do in a \u201cavoid\u201d situation by identifying safe exits and evaluating potential threats. The second scenario followed the \u201cdeny\u201d strategy, as athletes barricaded themselves in a classroom by using everyday objects including desks and chairs to prevent entry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53867700968_cefede522c.jpg\" alt=\"Cpl. In addition to NRP officers, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdsp.maryland.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland State Police<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mdta.maryland.gov\/Police\/Police_Main.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Transportation Authority Police<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were onsite to show their support for the athletes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Police Training and Standards Commission is the body established by the Maryland legislature to govern police certification and training in the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Special Olympics Maryland is a year-round sports organization dedicated to providing quality sports training and competition, health, and leadership opportunities to Maryland\u2019s children and adults with intellectual disabilities and\/or closely related development disabilities.
