{"id":41801,"date":"2024-06-20T11:39:59","date_gmt":"2024-06-20T15:39:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=41801"},"modified":"2024-06-20T11:39:59","modified_gmt":"2024-06-20T15:39:59","slug":"climate-resilience-projects-throughout-maryland-funded-with-2-9-million-in-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2024\/06\/20\/climate-resilience-projects-throughout-maryland-funded-with-2-9-million-in-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Resilience Projects Throughout Maryland Funded with $2.9 Million in Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51225361924_704b4df866.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of worker spreading sand along a shoreline\" width=\"354\" height=\"199\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crews constructing a living shoreline for flood mitigation in 2021, photo by Stephen Badger, Maryland Department of Natural Resources.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> announced more than $2.9 million in competitive grants for 12 climate resilience projects to help communities design and construct solutions to withstand flooding and other weather-related events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The selected projects will reduce risk for vulnerable communities, incorporate climate change data into existing plans and policies, and develop nature-based or natural solutions to help control flooding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Funding is provided by the state\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/ccs\/Pages\/Resiliency-through-Restoration.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Resiliency Through Restoration Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grant funding for Fiscal Year 2025 is awarded to the following local governments and community partners, pending final approval by federal partners:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Baltimore City:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Baltimore City Office of Sustainability<\/b> <b>\u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To create Watershed Master Plans for two of the five 8-digit watersheds within city boundaries to align with the City mission to holistically address flooding. The watersheds selected are Gwynns Falls and Baltimore Harbor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Church of the Guardian Angel \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To construct green infrastructure practices, create a green alley, and complement Baltimore City stormwater infrastructure improvements that will improve water quality and help reduce stormwater flooding in the neighborhood of Remington.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Baltimore County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Christian Liberty Church \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To design green infrastructure practices with rain garden, permeable paver, and landscaping features that improve water quality and help reduce stormwater flooding on West Baltimore and Reisterstown church properties.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Calvert County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Neeld Estate Citizens Association and Arundel Rivers Federation \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To construct a living shoreline along the Neeld Estate community that reduces erosion and increases community resilience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Town of North Beach<\/b> <b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To design green infrastructure practices with step pool, permeable pavement, and landscaping features that reduce stormwater flooding and improve water quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Charles County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Charles County Resiliency Authority \u2013\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To design a living shoreline for Popes Creek Waterfront to address flooding, erosion, and loss of marsh habitat.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Dorchester County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>City of Cambridge<\/b> <b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To design green infrastructure practices with bioswale and swale features for a new city stormwater park to reduce flooding and improve water quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Nanticoke Watershed Alliance<\/b> <b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To design green infrastructure practices with swale, berm, step pool and rain garden features that reduce stormwater flooding at a historically Black church on the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman Byway.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Kent County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>National Wildlife Federation \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To design a living shoreline at Minary\u2019s Dream Alliance that addresses erosion and provides community access to Morgan Creek, a tributary of the Chester River.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Queen Anne\u2019s County:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Queen Anne\u2019s County<\/b> <b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To construct a thin-layer sediment placement project to enhance the elevation of the tidal marsh with locally sourced dredged material.
