Maryland Department of Natural Resources photo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Board of Public Works today approved Maryland Department of Natural Resources items including $4.5 million in grants to local governments and land trusts to preserve and protect land, and provide recreational opportunities for Marylanders.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A total of $679,000 in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/pages\/programopenspace\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Program Open Space \u2013 Local<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was approved for seven projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Town of Sharpsburg in Washington County will receive a $370,000 grant for a new historical park that will showcase the area\u2019s rich history with a monument and signage. The City of Taneytown will receive about $100,000 in funding to replace an outdated playground located in Taneytown Memorial Park, Carroll County.\u00a0 Additionally, Frederick County will receive about $86,000 to renovate and improve trails at Emmitsburg\u2019s Rainbow Lake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/pages\/programopenspace\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Program Open Space \u2013 Local<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides funding for county and municipal governments for the planning, acquisition, and development of recreational land or facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also approved was $1 million from the Local Parks and Playgrounds Infrastructure Program for Prince George\u2019s County to acquire one acre of land in College Park for construction of a 14,000-square\u2013foot recreation and community center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Local Parks and Playgrounds Infrastructure Program was funded in FY 2022 and FY 2023 to provide grant funds primarily to local governments for park and recreation projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than $2.1 million in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Pages\/RuralLegacy\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rural Legacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> funding was approved for local sponsors to acquire conservation easements on six properties totaling 535 acres, all of which are located within the Chesapeake Bay watershed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An easement in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Documents\/RuralLegacy\/Landsend_rla.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lands End Rural Legacy Area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Queen Anne\u2019s County will protect more than 2,300 feet of forested stream buffer in the Chester River watershed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Long Green Valley Conservancy Inc. will acquire an easement in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Documents\/RuralLegacy\/LongGreenValley_rla.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Long Green Valley Rural Legacy Area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Baltimore County to protect nearly a mile-long stream buffer in the Gunpowder River watershed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Carroll County, an easement in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Documents\/RuralLegacy\/littlepipecrk_rla.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Little Pipe Creek Rural Legacy Area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will protect productive farmland and scenic roadside views.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Washington County will acquire an easement in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Documents\/RuralLegacy\/WA_MidMDrla.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mid-Maryland Washington Rural Legacy Area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to protect an historic farm and a mile-long buffer along Antietam Creek and associated tributaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Documents\/RuralLegacy\/AL_MountainRidge_rla.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mountain Ridge Rural Legacy Area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Allegany County, easements on two adjoining properties will preserve these forested properties, limit impervious surface, and protect the buffers in the Potomac River watershed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All projects funded are listed in the Board of Public Works June 5, 2024 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bpw.maryland.gov\/MeetingDocs\/2024-Jun-5-Agenda.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">meeting agenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The three-member Board of Public Works is composed of Governor Wes Moore, Treasurer Dereck E. Davis and Comptroller Brooke E.
