{"id":40689,"date":"2024-01-11T08:58:53","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T13:58:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=40689"},"modified":"2024-01-11T08:58:53","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T13:58:53","slug":"maryland-holding-first-youth-only-trout-fishing-day-on-march-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2024\/01\/11\/maryland-holding-first-youth-only-trout-fishing-day-on-march-23\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Holding First Youth-Only Trout Fishing Day on March 23"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52017978034_5c29805ed5.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of girl in a stream holding a trout\" width=\"358\" height=\"330\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Young angler with a trout, photo by Christopher Wike.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (DNR) is offering the state&#8217;s first-ever <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/go.activecalendar.com\/doit-md\/event\/youth-only-trout-fishing-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Youth-Only Trout Fishing Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for children under 16 years of age on March 23, one week before opening day for all trout anglers.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTrout fishing is a great way to introduce young people to the sport and our state\u2019s natural beauty,\u201d\u00a0 said John Mullican, Maryland DNR\u2019s director of freshwater fisheries and hatcheries. \u201cWe hope children across the state will take advantage of this day reserved just for them to enjoy stocked waterways that are typically still closed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On March 23, the state\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/pages\/trout\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">put-and-take trout areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> under closure at that time will be open to youth from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. These will be stocked in advance. Fishing areas under closure are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/go.activecalendar.com\/doit-md\/event\/youth-only-trout-fishing-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and in the Maryland Guide to Fishing and Crabbing. Youth anglers may catch and keep up to two trout each, except brook trout, which must be released if caught.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anglers should note that not all locations are open or accessible during fishing hours, so they should confirm their local access point&#8217;s operating hours before attending.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The traditional trout opening day for anglers of all ages will occur on March 30, beginning at 6:30 a.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/pages\/hatcheries\/facilities.aspx#cold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">coldwater hatcheries\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> produce about 290,000 adult rainbow, golden rainbow, and brown trout annually to meet the demands of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/pages\/hatcheries\/trout.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">put-and-take stocking program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
