The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has created a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/compass.dnr.maryland.gov\/Registration\/Express\/SaltWaterRegistration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">convenient form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that does not require the angler to create an account in the state licensing system.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The options for free registration now available for Maryland anglers are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Completing and submitting a convenient<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/compass.dnr.maryland.gov\/Registration\/Express\/SaltWaterRegistration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">online registration form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> available from<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the COMPASS login page, but without having to login or create a COMPASS account;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visiting a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/service_centers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Department of Natural Resources Service Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visiting any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/service_agents.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sport license agents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> located throughout the state; or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Registration through the state\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/compass.dnr.maryland.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">COMPASS License and Registration System<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with an account and login.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The registration is legally required with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/Saltwater-Angler-Registration.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a few exemptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and it is important to protecting Maryland\u2019s fishing opportunities. The recreational fishing data collected in this registry helps state and federal agencies sustainably manage U.S. fish stocks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2010, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) began requiring anglers to pay a fee and register with the National Saltwater Angler Registry before fishing for anadromous species\u2013those that move between saltwater and freshwater habitats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The next year, Maryland created its own free saltwater angler registration, required on an annual basis, to comply with this requirement.
