Photo by Patrick Siebert, Office of the Governor<\/i><\/b><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The judging is complete for the 2023 Arbor Day poster contest, sponsored by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Maryland First Lady Dawn Flythe Moore joined Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Josh Kurtz and a panel of forestry experts to review submissions and award three Maryland schools with tree plantings this spring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis annual contest is a wonderful way to engage students and to celebrate protecting the environment through artistic expression,\u201d said Maryland First Lady Dawn Flythe Moore. \u201cI am always amazed to see what passionate young minds can do when given the tools and inspiration to express their creativity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each fall, the Maryland Forest Service, in partnership with the Maryland Forest Conservancy District Boards, invites Maryland\u2019s fifth graders to submit a poster following a yearly theme. Posters are first judged on a county level and the winner from each county is forwarded to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programs\/urban\/mcfc.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Urban and Community Forestry Committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to be included in the annual contest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students created this year\u2019s posters using various artistic techniques, illustrating this year\u2019s contest theme, \u201cTrees Are Terrific\u2026\u200band Cool Our Communities\u200b!\u201d Addilyn Centineo, of Eldersburg, Carroll County won <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/52707074029\/in\/album-72177720306231654\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">first place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and her school will receive 15 trees for planting. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/52707235435\/in\/photostream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Second place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with a prize of 10 trees, was awarded to Daisy Vargas-Martinez of Pittsville, Wicomico County.
