{"id":37626,"date":"2022-11-02T12:29:57","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T16:29:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=37626"},"modified":"2022-11-02T12:29:57","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T16:29:57","slug":"marylands-junior-deer-hunt-opens-november-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2022\/11\/02\/marylands-junior-deer-hunt-opens-november-12\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland\u2019s Junior Deer Hunt Opens November 12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prime Time for Adult Hunters to Pass On the Traditions of Deer Hunting<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 362px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5086\/30066366121_8f61b75360.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of deer against backdrop of fall foliage\" width=\"352\" height=\"233\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Mathew Doged<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0encourages experienced deer hunters to take advantage of the upcoming\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/huntersguide\/Pages\/JrHunters.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Junior Deer Hunting Days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0to introduce youth to this time-honored cultural and sporting tradition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Junior Deer Hunt is open on private and designated public land in all counties on November 12. The season is also open on Sunday, November 13 on private land in all counties except Baltimore, Howard, and Prince George\u2019s. Also on November 13, junior hunters in Allegany, Cecil, Garrett, St. Mary\u2019s, and Washington counties, may hunt on designated public lands.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Junior Deer Hunt provides a great opportunity for mentors to teach young hunters the skills of deer hunting,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Director Paul Peditto said. \u201cThis time often coincides with peak deer activity and prime fall weather, making for a memorable hunt for all involved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunters 16 years of age or younger who possess a valid license may use air guns or firearms that meet the regulatory requirements to hunt sika and white-tailed deer on these days. Youth must be accompanied by an adult, at least 21 years old, holding a valid Maryland hunting license. Adults may serve as mentors only and not possess a hunting device while accompanying a junior hunter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunters who are not serving as mentors for a junior deer hunter may participate in other open hunting seasons during the junior deer hunt days. All deer hunters, archery and non-deer hunters, must wear the required hunter orange or pink during the youth hunt dates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bag limits for the Junior Deer Hunt Days are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One antlered or antlerless white-tailed deer in Region A;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Three white-tailed deer in Region B, with no more than one antlered; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One antlered or one antlerless sika deer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deer taken by youth hunters during the two days do not count toward regular archery, firearm, or muzzleloader bag limits. They are also exempt from the state\u2019s antler point restriction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Season dates, bag limits, hunting regulations, and registration procedures can be found in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eregulations.com\/maryland\/hunting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Guide to Hunting and Trapping.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunters should carefully inspect all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/nrp\/Pages\/treestand_tips.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tree stands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and always wear a full-body safety harness while in the stand and while climbing in or out. The department strongly recommends using a sliding knot, commonly known as a prusik knot, attached to a line that is secured above the stand that allows the hunter to be safely tethered to the tree as soon as they leave the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunters are encouraged to help others by donating deer taken in Maryland. A state tax credit offers hunters an incentive for donated deer.
