Pennsylvania Angler Reels in 18-Pound Shark at Ocean City<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Fay Ganster of Reading, Pennsylvania has been officially recognized by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as the new state record holder for the Atlantic Division with an 18-pound smooth dogfish she caught off the coast of Ocean City on October 22.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ganster, a frequent vacationer to Ocean City, booked a shark charter trip with her husband months in advance. However, the trip was canceled due to bad weather. At the last minute, Captain John Forman of the Bottom Bouncer fishing charter boat called to give them the green light.<\/span><\/p>\n

After four to five hours fishing near the Isle of Wight shoal, Ganster pulled in a few bluefish and sea bass. Using a chunk of cut bluefish as bait, she cast again, hooking her record catch. Ganster said it took about 20 minutes to reel it in and \u201cwas a little bit of a battle.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t been shark fishing in about 12 years,\u201d Ganster said. She added of her record catch, \u201cThis is really cool\u2026this is a big deal.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fish\u2019s weight was officially certified at Sunset Marina in Ocean City. A Maryland DNR biologist confirmed the catch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The smooth dogfish (<\/span>Mustelus canis) <\/span>is a member of the shark family and generally swims in packs or schools. The smooth dogfish can be caught year-round and there are no daily creel limits for anglers or vessels<\/span><\/p>\n

The department maintains <\/span>state records for sport fish<\/span><\/a> in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal, and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out the <\/span>state record application<\/span><\/a> and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325. The department recommends the fish be immersed in ice water to preserve its weight until it can be checked, confirmed, and certified.<\/span><\/p>\n
