The proclamation is part of an initiative that Governor Hogan, the Governor\u2019s Office of Service and Volunteerism, and the Governor\u2019s Office of Community Initiatives observe to mark the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. The announcement also launches the \u201cJust Serve\u201d initiative, an annual monthlong initiative to promote service and volunteerism statewide through October 10.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/justserve.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">justserve.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> web site and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goci.maryland.gov\/dtsstateemployees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Governor\u2019s Office of Community Initiative\u2019s website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provide additional information on opportunities to support this initiative including charitable work that benefits our state\u2019s natural resources.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">September is also a great time to highlight Maryland\u2019s rich hunting and trapping traditions. Many of our most popular seasons begin in earnest this month, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2022\/09\/01\/maryland-migratory-game-bird-hunting-2022-2023-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">migratory bird hunts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2022\/09\/07\/archery-hunting-for-deer-starts-september-9-statewide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bowhunting for deer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Our department is actively working to expand hunting and trapping opportunities and to encourage new hunters and younger generations to continue these conservation traditions. Our programs include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/hunt_trap\/Mentored-Hunt-Program.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mentored hunts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/nrp\/Pages\/About-the-Apprenticeship-Hunting-License.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">apprenticeship hunting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/pages\/armed_forces.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wounded warrior and veteran outreach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/pages\/education\/bow.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Becoming an Outdoors Woman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. If you are a hunter or trapper, we invite you to join us in our efforts by recruiting more participants or mentoring new hunters this season!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The importance of hunting and trapping to wildlife management was underscored this month by the eradication of a destructive invasive species that was threatening our lands. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After years of hard work and partnership, I was very pleased to join our Wildlife and Heritage Service staff, federal partners, and local landowners at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge to announce that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/press-release\/2022-09\/decades-long-partnership-eradicates-destructive-nutria-rodents-maryland\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">invasive rodent nutria are officially eradicated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the Delmarva Peninsula. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This success story is truly inspirational as we work to address other invasive species that threaten our natural environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/DNR_Secretary.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is Secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Step Up to Serve, Engage in Maryland Traditions Governor Larry Hogan proclaimed Sept. 11 a day of service and remembrance across the state of Maryland in memory of those lost in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
