The hypoxic water volume \u2014 waters with less than 2 mg\/l oxygen \u2014 was 0.51 and 0.98 cubic miles during early and late June monitoring cruises, compared to historical early and late June averages (1985-2021) of 0.87 and 1.31 cubic miles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During their respective time periods, the early June volume ranks as the 8th best on record and late June was 12th best. Additionally, a small volume of less than 0.1 cubic miles of anoxia \u2013 waters with less than 0.2 mg\/l oxygen \u2013 was observed during the late June cruise. Hypoxia was essentially zero (0.0002 cubic miles) in May.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/52247750920\/sizes\/z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52247750920_6af562e8eb_w.jpg\" alt=\"Map of hypoxia volumes recorded in early June 2022\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/52247267478\/sizes\/c\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52247267478_8fe0458395_w.jpg\" alt=\"Line graph of historic dissolved oxygen recordings\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/52246281307\/sizes\/z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52246281307_18de52799c_w.jpg\" alt=\"Map of Chesapeake Bay hypoxia recorded in late June 2022\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/52247539419\/sizes\/c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52247539419_2b916a1bb7_w.jpg\" alt=\"Line graph comparing historic hypoxia volumes late June\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" \/><\/a>Maryland and Virginia combined results are presented for the mainstem Bay to be more comparable to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chesapeakebay.net\/news\/blog\/bays_dead_zone_is_predicted_to_be_13_smaller_this_summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">yearly seasonal forecast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s Chesapeake Bay Program, U.S. Geological Survey, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, and University of Michigan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In late June, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chesapeakebay.net\/news\/blog\/bays_dead_zone_is_predicted_to_be_13_smaller_this_summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">forecast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> expected mainstem hypoxic volume to be 13% lower than the 37-year average, due to reduced river flows from January through May 2022, as well as less nitrogen carried to the Bay because of nutrient management efforts. Maryland and Virginia\u2019s monitoring results thus far have matched the forecast of better-than-average conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crabs, fish, oysters, and other creatures in the Chesapeake Bay require oxygen to survive. Scientists and natural resource managers study the volume and duration of Bay hypoxia to determine possible impacts to aquatic life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each year from May through October, DNR computes hypoxia volumes from the water quality data collected by DNR and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Data collection is funded by these states and the Chesapeake Bay Program. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/waters\/bay\/pages\/hypoxia-reports.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bay hypoxia monitoring and reporting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will continue through the summer.
