{"id":36337,"date":"2022-06-28T08:30:37","date_gmt":"2022-06-28T12:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=36337"},"modified":"2022-06-27T17:12:27","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T21:12:27","slug":"bird-safe-window-treatments-installed-at-dnr-headquarters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2022\/06\/28\/bird-safe-window-treatments-installed-at-dnr-headquarters\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird-Safe Window Treatments Installed at DNR Headquarters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Protective Applications Help Birds Avoid Glass<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52177696384_bc2d2d5670.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of woman applying dot stickers to a window\" width=\"351\" height=\"261\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Claudia Donegan, Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Safe Skies Maryland recently partnered to install special window treatments that reduce and prevent bird collisions with windows at the department&#8217;s Tawes State Office Building headquarters in Annapolis.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With up to 1 billion birds killed every year by striking windows, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcbirds.org\/glass-collisions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have proven the effectiveness of special window treatments applied to commercial and residential structures in reducing bird deaths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Birds strike windows because they see a reflection of themselves or trees in them, or they think it\u2019s open space because they can see through the glass. The Tawes State Office Building is a four-story structure built in the early 1970s and includes on its grounds the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/pages\/southern\/tawesgarden.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a forested urban park that is home to many species of birds.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 362px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52177447516_e987cbd181.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of building exterior with cords draped from top floor\" width=\"352\" height=\"264\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Claudia Donegan, Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mdbirds.org\/safeskiesmaryland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Safe Skies Maryland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an initiative of the Maryland Ornithological Society, teamed with DNR to install Acopian Bird Saver cords and dot stickers from manufacturer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.featherfriendly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feather Friendly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Both applications are barely visible to the human eye from a distance, but will allow birds to see the glass and avoid it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019re extremely grateful for the volunteers and staff that helped us complete this project,\u201d said Claudia Donegan, habitat restoration and conservation director for DNR\u2019s Chesapeake and Coastal Service. \u201cAfter observing so many bird strikes, given our professional purpose of conserving wildlife, we looked for a solution to make sure our office building itself supports our mission and goals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Park Service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which manages Tawes Garden, provided funding for the installation and is encouraging building owners to protect birds by adding these treatments to their windows. Staff and volunteers will monitor the effort\u2019s success in reducing bird strikes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEveryone has heard, seen, or knows about birds hitting windows, they just don\u2019t know that it happens so often, with a major environmental impact,\u201d Safe Skies Maryland Director Carolyn Parsa said. \u201cIdeally, buildings would be installed with bird-safe glass. It\u2019s less of a hassle, and even more energy efficient than regular glass.
