Through the weekend of March 12-13, more than 1,500 people attended the events celebrating Tubman\u2019s bicentennial, despite cold and snowy weather. Governor Larry Hogan began the celebration on Saturday, March 12, when he proclaimed 2022 to be \u201cThe Year of Harriet Tubman,\u201d presenting a citation to Tubman\u2019s family members who attended.<\/p>\n<p>The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center is co-managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service, and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park. Harriet Tubman was born to Ben Ross and Harriet \u201cRit\u201d Green, and given the name Araminta \u201cMinty\u201d Ross at birth. Her family was enslaved by the Thompson family in Dorchester County. She later adopted her mother\u2019s name, \u201cHarriet,\u201d and the last name of her first husband, John Tubman.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 416px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a title=\"Harriet Tubman Day 2022\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/51945124552\/in\/photolist-2n9dkMJ-2n9jZfu-2n9jZb6-2n9iorA-2n9iKYf-2n9iooQ-2n9ioo4-2n9iKVe-2n9ioko-2n9iKS8-2n9iKQV-2n9muj5-2n9iKMJ-2n9dkWb-2n9iL8Z-2n9iL83-2n9iouS-2n9dkDn-2n9iKKz-2n9muf7-2n9iKH5-2n9jYNH-2n9dkhq-2n9io5t-2n9io4g-2n9mu76-2n9mu5H-2n9mu4f-2n9mu3y-2n9inWc-2n9inVq-2n9inUo-2n9dk5b-2n9dk3Y-2n9iKoH-2n9djZ1-2n9iKkS-2n9djVJ-2n9jYqJ-2n9inJJ-2n9inHB-2n9jYnN-2n9mtJC-2n9iKcq-2n9mtGi-24J6PUR-24J6PRK-24J6PR4-2fkFeAF-24J6PM6\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51945124552_b192950a7e.jpg\" alt=\"Harriet Tubman Day 2022\" width=\"406\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park ranger displays artifacts to park guests<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Among the artifacts on loan from the Maryland State Archives for the celebration was Anthony Thompson\u2019s ledger dated March 15, 1822, where he stated he had spent $2 for a midwife to assist Rit with a childbirth\u2014the child\u2019s name is not mentioned, but it is most likely Araminta\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n<p>Also on display were items recovered from the site of her father Ben Ross\u2019 cabin, which was recently discovered in the nearby U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and excavated by Maryland Department of Transportation archeologists.<\/p>\n<p>Tubman escaped enslavement and fled to Pennsylvania but subsequently returned to conduct about 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, including family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet Tubman is revered in Maryland and nationwide as a freedom fighter, leader, and humanitarian. During the past five years, Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center has welcomed more than 300,000 guests from nearly 70 countries to this park, sharing Harriet Tubman\u2019s story of incredible sacrifice and determination.
