Maryland DNR photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/nrp\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Natural Resources Police<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (NRP) held its annual award ceremony to recognize the achievements made by conservation law enforcement officers in 2021. The annual event was held May 14 at Anne Arundel Community College.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;It is important that we recognize and award the many contributions our officers make,&#8221; NRP Superintendent Col. Adrian Baker said. \u201cThey are not only sworn to protect our precious natural resources but provide public safety. I&#8217;m proud to say our agency consists of committed and courageous men and women dedicated to protecting and serving. I appreciate their devotion to the Maryland Natural Resources Police.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Individual officers and staff that were honored were:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corporal Brian Hunt and Officer First Class Jacob Gerczak were each awarded the Medal of Valor, the agency&#8217;s highest award. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corporal Hunt, an NRP diver, rescued a man from beneath a capsized boat in the Chesapeake Bay, saving his life.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52080730961_d3eba8c06b_z.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of three officers, one holding a commendation\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Officer First Class Jacob Gerczak. Maryland DNR Photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Officer Gerczak prevented two separate suicide attempts within two months, including saving <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2021\/11\/08\/natural-resources-police-officer-prevents-a-suicide-in-cecil-county-river\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">one woman who jumped into frigid waters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and talking with another woman <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2022\/01\/12\/nrp-officer-prevents-a-second-suicide-in-two-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">until she safely stepped down from a bridge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52080968844_187953881b_z.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of officers shaking hands on a stage\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Officer First Class Nathaniel Minnick. <\/span>Maryland DNR photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Officer First Class Nathaniel Minnick, assigned to the Western Region, was named the 2021 Officer of the Year for his rigorous pursuit of violators of Maryland&#8217;s wildlife laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52080744958_6c15df7ee2_z.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of three officer on stage, holding three commendations\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Officer First Class Jeremy Ryan. <\/span>Maryland DNR photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Officer First Class Jeremy Ryan, who patrols the Upper Eastern Shore, was selected as the Conservation Officer of the Year. He was also awarded the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fishing and Boating Services Officer of the Year and Shikar Safari Wildlife award for his proactive enforcement efforts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52080731336_214ea66256_z.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of officers on a stage\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Officer First Class Thomas Burt. <\/span>Maryland DNR photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Officer First Class Thomas Burt of the Lower Eastern Shore was honored as Boating Safety Officer of the Year. He received an additional award presented by DNR Fishing and Boating Services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sergeant Sean Wiles was awarded the Support Services\/Special Services Officer of the Year award for his commitment and dedication. Sgt. Wiles is an essential part of coordinating events involving NRP&#8217;s police academy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corporal Erica Garver, assigned to the Western Region, was awarded the Maryland Park Service Officer of the Year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twenty-eight officers received the Award of Merit, the second-highest honor, for actions that saved lives on the water and on land: Officer Charles Tyler, Officer Charles McCauley, Officer Charles Wheatley, Officer Albert Leavell, Officer Robert Offenbacker, Officer Liam D&#8217;Aoust, Officer Joseph Gukanovich, Sgt. Robert Bakeoven, Officer Jacob Gerczak, Officer Andrew Blickenstaff, Sgt. B.C. Miller, Officer Gannon Lyons, Corporal Bernard Haberkam, Officer Shane Falconer, Corporal Timothy Fabian, Corporal Christopher Stancliff, Officer Racquel Kavanaugh, Officer Andrew Cummins, Officer Connor Heavner, and Sergeant Jacob Coxon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additional awards included the unit citation, which recognizes a specific area or district for superior performance; the superintendent&#8217;s letter of appreciation; and the superintendent&#8217;s commendation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the ceremony, multiple officers who received promotions were also honored.
