{"id":35706,"date":"2022-03-03T12:29:41","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T17:29:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=35706"},"modified":"2022-03-03T12:31:57","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T17:31:57","slug":"maryland-dnr-app-available-to-locate-key-oyster-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2022\/03\/03\/maryland-dnr-app-available-to-locate-key-oyster-sites\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland DNR App Available to Locate Key Oyster Sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Development of iShellfish Follows Legislation Signed in 2021<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5740\/22704867362_033db9ddf3.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of DNR boat approaching commercial oyster boats\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maryland DNR photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announces the development of a new mobile app, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/pages\/ishellfish\/main.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">iShellfish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, to provide interactive maps for commercial watermen and other users to locate areas they need to find or avoid while on Maryland\u2019s waterways.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland DNR developed the app last year in response to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mgaleg.maryland.gov\/mgawebsite\/Legislation\/Details\/hb0800?ys=2021RS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bill passed by the Maryland Legislature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and signed into law on May 18, 2021. The app helps individuals on the waters of the state determine their location in real time relative to: aquaculture leases; demonstration leases; fixed fishing devices, such as registered pound net sites; natural clam or oyster bars\u200b; oyster sanctuaries; public shellfish fishery areas; submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) protection zones; Yates bars;\u00a0 or any other data areas the department deems relevant to the end user.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe department is committed to providing the best information possible in user-friendly methods that reach our stakeholders and the public,\u201d Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio said \u201cWe supported and were pleased to meet the goals of this legislation as part of our continuous efforts to use new technologies to support the ecological and economic goals for Maryland\u2019s waterways.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instructions for downloading and using the app are available on the DNR website. Waterway users are responsible to maintain internet coverage while using the application.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The mobile application is intended to be a guide on the water and is not intended to be used for navigational purposes.
