{"id":35692,"date":"2022-02-28T12:45:06","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T17:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=35692"},"modified":"2022-02-28T12:51:42","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T17:51:42","slug":"free-trees-available-for-marylands-backyard-buffers-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2022\/02\/28\/free-trees-available-for-marylands-backyard-buffers-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Trees Available for Maryland\u2019s \u2018Backyard Buffers\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Waterfront and Streamside Landowners can Reserve Seedlings<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4816\/44567415960_0b351fd630.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a surrounded by trees and other vegetation\" width=\"364\" height=\"244\" \/>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> is offering free tree seedlings to landowners statewide who have a creek, drainage ditch, stream, or other waterway on or near their property through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programs\/Backyard-Buffer-Program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Backyard Buffers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> program, now available in 23 counties.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trees and shrubs planted along waterways help improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients, lowering peak water temperatures, reducing sediment, and stabilizing stream banks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each \u201cbuffer in a bag\u201d contains about 25 native bare-root tree and shrub seedlings with species appropriate to their region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Forest Service staff will provide information on tree maintenance and planting techniques, in addition to suggestions of other suitable native species at the time of pickup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The program is available in all Maryland jurisdictions except Baltimore City. Quantities are limited so reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
