Photo by Joe Andrucyk, Marlyland State House.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fifth-grade students who submitted Arbor Day posters to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> had their work judged today by a panel of forestry experts and a special guest judge, Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan, who is an accomplished artist and adjunct professor at Maryland Institute College of Art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The posters were created using varied artistic techniques, including colored pencils, crayons, markers and paint, all illustrating this year\u2019s contest theme, \u201cTrees are Terrific\u2026and Maryland Forests are Too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Original artwork focused on trees cleaning the air, creating shade and generally contributing to healthy outdoor living.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt is an honor to participate in this annual event, highlighting the artistic talents of Maryland\u2019s school children, and celebrating our environment and the trees that call it home,\u201d said First Lady Yumi Hogan, who has served as a guest judge each year since 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 334px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51889305996_5bea5bb5bc_b.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of winning 2022 Arbor Day poster\" width=\"324\" height=\"434\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">First Prize was awarded to Camden Steiner of Harford County. Photo by Joe Andrucyk, Maryland State House<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first-place winner is Camden Steiner from Bel Air, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harford County. Camden\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">school will receive a prize of 15 trees. The second-place winner is Arynn Brooks From Waldorf, Charles County. Arynn\u2019s school will receive 10 trees for planting. The third-place winner is Alexis Horichs from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Westminster, Carroll County. Alexis\u2019 school will receive five trees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur Arbor Day Poster Contest provides a great opportunity for Maryland\u2019s 5th grade students to learn about the importance of our forests while recognizing their artistic talents,\u201d Natural Resources Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio said. \u201cI am always impressed with the quality of their work which demonstrates that they will be good stewards of our natural resources for years to come.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Forest Service accepted hundreds of entries for the 2022 Arbor Day Poster Contest. Previously selected winners from each participating county were then forwarded for judging by the volunteer Maryland Urban and Community Forest Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Arbor Day Poster Contest is hosted annually by the department\u2019s Tree-Mendous Maryland Program.
