Official results have been compiled and reported by the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0following the five-day hunt held Oct. 25-29 in Allegany, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington counties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abundant natural food in the mountains of Western Maryland slowed bear movements, and warm and sometimes wet weather conditions made hunting difficult. Hunters harvested 34 female and 20 male bears under these less-than-ideal conditions.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMother Nature proved challenging this year for our bear hunters,\u201d Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said. \u201cAlthough the harvest was lower than normal, it is encouraging to see the healthy harvest in Frederick and Washington counties, where the bear population continues to grow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2021 Maryland Black Bear Hunt by the Numbers:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">54 black bears were harvested: 6 from Allegany County, 5 from Frederick County, 33 from Garrett County, and 10 from Washington County<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">146 pounds is the average weight of bears harvested<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The heaviest bear weighed 362 pounds and was taken in Washington County<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">63% of bears were taken on private land<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4,716 hunters applied for a permit<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">950 permits were awarded<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More information about black bear management in Maryland is available on the department\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/hunt_trap\/BlackBear.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Weather and Abundant Food Prove Challenging for Hunters Hunters harvested 54 black bears during Maryland\u2019s 18th annual black bear hunt.
