Photo courtesy Big Fish Classic, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An Anne Arundel County angler is now the first officially recognized state record holder for swordfish, which he caught in a tournament July 23 at Ocean City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Annapolis resident Peter Schultz, 36, is the first record holder for the Atlantic division &#8211; Swordfish <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Xiphias gladius)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Schultz caught the 301-pound swordfish while participating in the Big Fish Classic Tournament, landing the record-breaking catch roughly 50 miles offshore at Washington Canyon.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Using a dead eel on a circle hook; Talica 50 reel with 65-pound braid line; and a 25-foot, 150-pound leader, Schultz and his team reeled in the fish following an epic, eight-hour effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Schultz describes the swordfish as a \u201cfish of a lifetime\u201d and credits his team for the record catch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe put so much effort into this,\u201d Schultz said \u201cEveryone had a crucial role.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The swordfish weight was officially certified by Dave Hedges of M.R. Ducks &#8211; Talbot Street Pier. A Maryland Department of Natural Resources biologist confirmed the catch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The department maintains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state records for sport fish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal, and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state record application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
