Heavy traffic is expected again on our waterways as outdoor recreation continues to increase. Keep an eye out for our <a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2021\/05\/05\/may-is-boating-safety-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boater safety<\/a> reminders this month and throughout the boating season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">May also marks the return of another beloved Maryland tradition &#8212; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2021\/04\/26\/maryland-park-quest-takes-flight-for-2021-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Park Quest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. More than 25 Maryland State Parks will offer do-it-yourself outdoor activities now through Oct. 31 for families to experience the vast cultural, historical, and natural resources on our public lands and parks. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The theme for this popular program in 2021 will be \u201cSpread Your Wings to Explore Maryland\u2019s State Parks,\u201d with a focus on Maryland\u2019s birds.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft \" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7912\/46193085924_bb2e62c963_w.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Secretary Riccio\" width=\"195\" height=\"257\" \/>This spring there will be more than just the sound of boat engines and birds singing. Much of our state is abuzz about the return of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2021\/04\/16\/maryland-native-wildlife-brood-x-periodical-cicadas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">17-year periodical cicada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8212; three different species of Magicicada known as Brood X. or the Great Eastern Brood. In fact, Governor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Larry Hogan issued a proclamation declaring May and June 2021 as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDEsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMTA0MzAuMzk3MjE2MzEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL2dvdmVybm9yLm1hcnlsYW5kLmdvdi93cC1jb250ZW50L3VwbG9hZHMvMjAyMS8wNC9NYXJ5bGFuZC1NYWdpY2ljYWRhLU1vbnRocy1NYXktSnVuZS0yMDIxLnBkZiJ9.KOEdC__BnP_Ks_XkNnJC3ccFrRD2lU1FNnErDcSiCPc\/s\/662362186\/br\/105648152825-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Magicicada Months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to generate public awareness about these fascinating insects. Personally, I prefer the return of hummingbirds and Monarchs, but cicadas are completely harmless and they are fascinating creatures &#8211; and may even help with your fly fishing game!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking of which, f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/tag\/weekly-fishing-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ishing is getting into full gear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> across the state from the surf of the Atlantic Ocean to the still waters of Deep Creek Lake.\u00a0 And hunters still have time to bag a wild turkey during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2021\/04\/12\/statewide-spring-turkey-season-set-to-open-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">statewide spring turkey season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which runs through May 24.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In other words, spring in Maryland offers something for everyone when it comes to outdoor recreation.
