{"id":33255,"date":"2021-04-30T06:45:16","date_gmt":"2021-04-30T10:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=33255"},"modified":"2021-04-29T20:47:16","modified_gmt":"2021-04-30T00:47:16","slug":"maryland-forest-action-plan-and-strategy-finalized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2021\/04\/30\/maryland-forest-action-plan-and-strategy-finalized\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Forest Action Plan and Strategy Finalized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Focus on Growing Forests, Habitats, Markets, and Jobs<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 371px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8113\/30065842341_db6d2a7509.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a path leading into a forest\" width=\"361\" height=\"271\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Patricia Klein, submission to 2016 Maryland Natural Resources Photo Contest,<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Forest Service has released its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/SFAP.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Forest Action Plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which contains an assessment of statewide forest conditions and a strategy that identifies major goals and actions to reach them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Working collaboratively with partners and stakeholders, the Maryland Forest Service developed a Forest Action Plan Strategy, which is based on the seven principles of sustainable forestry: biodiversity, forest productivity, ecosystem health, soil and water health, global carbon, socioeconomic support, and legal and institutional frameworks.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Strategy goals of the Forest Action Plan are to grow forests, habitats, markets and jobs; manage forest health and fire; provide clean water; create healthy, livable communities, and adapt to climate change. The plan will be used as a basis for the state to propose needed investments of state and federal dollars, in combination with other available income streams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Forest Service encourages Maryland residents to help grow the state\u2019s tree canopy through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/MarylandersPlantTrees\/Introduction.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marylanders Plant Trees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A national land conservation program for working forests is also featured in the plan through the federal Forest Legacy program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/SFAP.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Forest Action Plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is available on the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Focus on Growing Forests, Habitats, Markets, and Jobs The Maryland Forest Service has released its Maryland Forest Action Plan, which contains an assessment of statewide forest conditions and a strategy that identifies major goals and actions to reach them.
