Fish Caught in Broad Creek Breaks Record Held since 2019<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n\r\n

A Harford County youth angler has officially been recognized by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> as a new state record holder for fallfish<\/a> in the nontidal division. Maxwell Diegel caught the 2.14-pound fallfish — <\/span>Semotilus corporalis —<\/span> on April 19 while fishing in Broad Creek, his local stream.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The 13-year-old angler was fishing <\/span>from shore with corn and worms <\/span>when he hooked his record catch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cI knew I had something big when the rod bent in half,\u201d said Diegel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Diegel\u2019s catch broke the <\/span>previous state record<\/span><\/a> fallfish of 2.07 pounds by Adam Aghion in 2019. The fallfish weight was officially certified by Ashley Reimer of Conrad\u2019s Crabs and Seafood in Bel Air. A Maryland Department of Natural Resources biologist confirmed the catch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After Diegel realized he had a new state record, he \u201cdanced around and did a celebration,\u201d and said the catch even led to a summer job opportunity at the seafood market that weighed the fish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The department maintains <\/span>state records for sport fish<\/span><\/a> in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal, and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out the <\/span>state record application<\/span><\/a> and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325. The department recommends the fish be immersed in ice water to preserve its weight until it can be checked, confirmed, and certified.<\/span><\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
