{"id":32795,"date":"2021-03-19T09:05:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-19T13:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=32795"},"modified":"2021-03-19T09:51:29","modified_gmt":"2021-03-19T13:51:29","slug":"2021-keep-maryland-beautiful-grants-total-312500","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2021\/03\/19\/2021-keep-maryland-beautiful-grants-total-312500\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 Keep Maryland Beautiful Grants Total $312,500"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grants Supports Communities, Projects and Schools<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50993544868_cc87739041.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of young people planting flowers in urban area\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Living Classrooms Foundation was a recipient of a 2021 Keep Maryland Beautiful Grant.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The State of Maryland and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forevermaryland.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forever Maryland Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are proud to announce that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\/Documents\/Keep+Maryland+Beautiful+2021+Award+Recipients.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">91 Keep Maryland Beautiful grants <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">totaling <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">$312,500 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have been awarded toward environmental education, community cleanup, and beautification projects through the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forevermaryland.org\/grants-page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep Maryland Beautiful<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These annual grants are funded by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Environmental Trust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a unit of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> (DNR); the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">F<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">orever Maryland Foundation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD); and the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT).<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese grants support the incredible efforts of citizens across Maryland who are stewards of our communities, our green spaces, and our waterways,\u201d Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio said. \u201cDNR is proud to partner with the Maryland Environmental Trust, the Forever Maryland Foundation, DHCD, MDOT, and of course the recipients themselves on this important part of our mission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Local volunteers and stakeholders are changing neighborhoods for the better through the Keep Maryland Beautiful program,&#8221; said Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Kenneth C. Holt. &#8220;These Clean Up and Green Up awards will help our great partners continue to improve and beautify communities in all parts of Maryland.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMDOT is committed not only to a comprehensive transportation network, but also to environmental education, preservation and stewardship, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s important to contribute to the Keep Maryland Beautiful program,\u201d MDOT Secretary Greg Slater said. \u2018It\u2019s good to know the funds MDOT provides goes to almost 20 different groups, ranging from community and neighborhood associations to conservancies and land trusts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recipients included schools, nonprofit groups, municipalities and land trusts in 19 counties and Baltimore City.\u00a0 Many of these grants focus on developing and supporting communities, families, youth and students who take personal responsibility for the health of their communities, protecting nature in their backyards and seeking ways to help reduce or resolve environmental challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are pleased to see our local communities receive Keep Maryland Beautiful grant funds for such innovative projects which will make an impact on our Maryland environment in many ways,\u201d Forever Maryland Foundation Chair Steve Quarles said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Awards given this year were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forevermaryland.org\/land-trust-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aileen Hughes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0award totaling $5,000, awarded to an individual representing a Maryland land trust for outstanding leadership, partnership and innovation in a conservation project. The grant is awarded to the Maryland land trust in recognition of the individual\u2019s efforts and good work. The grant is given annually to honor the late Aileen Hughes, a true leader in the conservation movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">12\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forevermaryland.org\/environmental-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Citizen Stewardship<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">awards totaling $17,500, given in honor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of\u00a0<\/span><b>Bill James<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who drafted the legislation that founded Maryland Environmental Trust, and\u00a0<\/span><b>Margaret Rosch Jones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, former executive director of the Keep Maryland Beautiful program. These grants are awarded to schools, nonprofits and other community organizations whose missions are centered upon directly engaging community members in environmental education and stewardship. These grants also support organizations that demonstrate active engagement as defenders of the environment by developing innovative solutions to local environmental problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">65\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forevermaryland.org\/environmental-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clean Up &amp; Green Up Maryland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Grant\u00a0awards totaling $250,000. This grant was established in 2017 to help community groups and nonprofit organizations statewide with neighborhood beautification activities that include litter removal, greening activities, community education, and citizen stewardship statewide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">13\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forevermaryland.org\/land-trust-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Janice Hollmann Grant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0awards totaling $40,000, given to Maryland land trusts to increase capacity, support community programing and innovation and foster stronger, better connected land trusts. All grants require a 100 percent match from the land trust of in-kind services and privately raised funds. The grant is given in memory of Janice Hollmann, who exemplified citizen leadership of local land trusts in Maryland.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2021 recipients of Keep
