The National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD), an organization dedicated to supporting and promoting state parks, presented the award at its annual conference last month. <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> leadership and Maryland Park Service staff were able to join Superintendent Settina via a virtual \u201cviewing party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Superintendent Settina has led the Maryland Park Service since 2008, when she became the first woman to lead the state\u2019s park system since its establishment in 1906. The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a state park director who has demonstrated a long-term, sustained record of professional accomplishment in the field of park and recreation management.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Superintendent Settina\u2019s watch, several new state parks have been added or expanded, including <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/tubman.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/southern\/newtowne.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newtowne Neck<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/Wolf-Den-Run.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wolf Den Run<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/sangrun.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sang Run<\/a>, and all-time attendance records have been broken almost yearly &#8212; including a remarkable 21 million visitors in 2020. In presenting the award, the NASPD also noted her work with underserved communities, including the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/cjc.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservation Jobs Corps<\/a>, which now provides jobs for 300-400 youth each year, and her leadership role in establishing the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/pgc\/Pages\/History-and-Achievements.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children in Nature<\/a> initiative. In addition, Nita was lauded for her work in resource management, including the protection of tens of thousands of hemlock and ash trees from deadly invasive forest pests, such as the hemlock woolly adelgid and emerald ash borer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNita has been deservedly honored among her national peers &#8212; her success can be measured in many ways, perhaps none more telling than the 21 million visitors who safely enjoyed Maryland State Parks this year,\u201d said Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio. \u201cNita has overseen a Maryland park service that has expanded access and broken barriers.
