{"id":32395,"date":"2020-12-22T09:20:23","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T14:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=32395"},"modified":"2021-01-05T13:32:32","modified_gmt":"2021-01-05T18:32:32","slug":"first-day-hikes-to-ring-in-the-new-year-for-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2020\/12\/22\/first-day-hikes-to-ring-in-the-new-year-for-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"First Day Hikes to Ring in the New Year for 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Weekend Of Self-Guided Walks on Maryland Public Lands<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1585\/23563134663_b61be62c6f.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of small group of hikers on a wooden boardwalk\" width=\"350\" height=\"250\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Merkle Natural Resources Management Area in Prince George&#8217;s County<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> invites everyone to take a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/firstdayhikes.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First Day Hike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Maryland\u2019s annual tradition for a fun, healthy way to welcome the New Year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Park Service<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">will offer self-guided hike opportunities across the state from January 1-3, 2021.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> As always, Maryland\u2019s state parks, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/mdforests.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state forests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Wildlife\/Pages\/publiclands\/home.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wildlife management areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will be open for trekking hundreds of miles of trails. However, due to the pandemic and physical distancing guidance, hikes will be self-guided and park staff will not be leading the hikes this year.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These hikes will provide a variety of outdoor adventures and experiences for every level of hiker and walker, including unique access to Maryland\u2019s cultural, historic natural resources and treasures, along with opportunities for education and stewardship. Many hikes are even pet-friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Among those planning a hike will be Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio and Lt. Governor Boyd K. Rutherford, continuing his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/governor.maryland.gov\/ltgovernor\/2689-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">commitment to visiting all Maryland state parks and other public lands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by the time he leaves office. Lt. Governor Rutherford and the secretary kicked off 2020 with a hike at Patuxent River State Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;First Day Hikes are a wonderful tradition; they start the year off on the right foot with fresh air, exercise, and the appreciation and enjoyment of Maryland&#8217;s beautiful state parks and public lands,&#8221; said Lt. Governor Rutherford. &#8220;With all the challenges of the past year, participating in a socially-distant, self-guided First Day Hike and enjoying quality time outdoors is the perfect way to welcome 2021.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOver the past year, Maryland\u2019s amazing natural resources have provided us with safe recreation and quality time together which many of us needed,\u201d Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio said. \u201cAs we begin 2021, we want to remind everyone that there are many great winter activities to take advantage of on our public lands. Hiking on our world-class trail systems is a great way to get a healthy start in the new year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On New Year\u2019s Day 2020, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2020\/01\/03\/record-participants-hike-in-new-year-across-maryland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">record 5,000 hikers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> logged more than 10,000 miles on trails in parks and public lands all across Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All hikers should follow<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Publiclands\/Pages\/COVID-19-Virus-Alert.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Maryland State Parks\u2019 guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for outdoor exercise and recreation to slow the spread of COVID-19, including keeping a 6-foot distance from anyone outside their household and wearing a face covering when in close proximity to others and when indoors. Anyone who is sick or has been sick over the past two weeks should stay home to recuperate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After their visit, hikers are asked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/hmoF84c7zqFmVMW69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">complete an online survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to track their hikes and how many miles they covered.\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide event sponsored by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stateparks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">America\u2019s State Parks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Note to Editors and Producers:<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If you plan to cover a First Day Hike, please contact the Department of Natural Resources <a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/media-contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office of Communications<\/a> prior to Dec. 30 if possible.
