The survey was conducted on behalf of the department by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/responsivemanagement.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Responsive Management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a leading survey research firm specializing in natural resource and outdoor recreation issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The survey focused on the characteristics of Maryland\u2019s hunters and the type of hunting they do, their use and satisfaction with hunting on Maryland\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Wildlife\/Pages\/publiclands\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wildlife Management Areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and their opinions on hunting-related issues.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe survey provides a wealth of information that will help us improve delivery of our programs to hunters in Maryland,\u201d Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some highlights of the survey include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">84% of hunters were very or somewhat satisfied with their Maryland hunting experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">White-tailed deer, followed by Canada geese, wild turkey, ducks, and squirrels were hunted most often.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The average hunter spent nearly 30 days afield each year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The counties hunted most often were Baltimore, Carroll, Dorchester, Frederick, Garrett, and Kent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">72% of hunters wanted more Sunday hunting opportunities, including support from migratory bird hunters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">28% of hunters used Maryland Wildlife Management Areas and 67% were very or somewhat satisfied with their experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nearly 60% of respondents had taken a new hunter afield in the past five years, and 95% agreed that it was important to introduce new individuals to hunting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Documents\/102720_MD-HuntingReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">full survey<\/a> is on the department\u2019s website.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Respondents Share Views on Hunting Issues The Maryland Department of Natural Resources today released results of a survey of Maryland hunters\u2019 attitudes towards a variety of topics related to hunting in Maryland.
