The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has a few important suggestions that homeowners should follow before hiring a contractor to do the work.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programapps\/newtreeexpert.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Licensed Tree Experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> should be hired to trim branches and remove trees \u2013 they are the only tree care professionals who lawfully can perform this work in Maryland.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before a contractor begins work, homeowners should ask to see a license. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programapps\/newtreeexpert.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">department\u2019s website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> also allows anyone to check a contractor for a license number.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Licensed Tree Experts are required to carry insurance that covers tree care work. A company that isn\u2019t licensed is not only violating the law, but may not have the proper coverage in case of damage or injury.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The department also recommends that homeowners obtain more than one estimate for the proposed work; receive a written contract that states the work to be performed and the cost; and never pay the full amount before all the contracted work is completed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anyone who believes that they\u2019ve been approached by an unlicensed business advertising or practicing tree care services in Maryland can file a complaint <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programapps\/newtreeexpert.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or contact the Maryland Forest Service at 410-260-8511.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To protect the public, the Maryland Forest Service investigates complaints against individuals or entities that provide tree care services. Unlicensed tree care service providers are subject to criminal prosecution for operating without a tree expert license, and advertising without a license. Additionally, Licensed Tree Experts who violate the law can face suspension or revocation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anyone interested in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programapps\/LTE_How-to-Apply.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">applying for a license<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> can do so on the department\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the department is currently allowing licensed tree experts seeking to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programapps\/LTE-License-Renewal.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">renew their license<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to use virtual webinars posted online for their required continuing education credits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Make Sure Work is Legal, Safe, and Insured Now that leaves are fallen, many Marylanders will prepare for winter by trimming live trees or removing dead trees.
