About 30% of Maryland\u2019s native bees nest in tubes and tunnels. Very few of these species are able to excavate their own nests too. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/HabichatArchive\/Habichat46.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">previous Habichat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we covered how to make nest blocks for bees. This article will cover how to create habitat for those that nest in stems of flowers and woody plants.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To help stem nesting bees, you should include pithy flower stalks and soft, pithy wood in your backyard as nesting locations. Pithy plants have spongy, soft tissue in the central stalk of the plant. Plants with hollow piths are also ideal for nesting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plants that provide this habitat include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hyssop (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agastache foeniculum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)- non-native\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Swamp milkweed (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Asclepias incarnata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; native<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joe pyeweed (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eutrochium purpureum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; native<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Purple coneflower (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Echinacea purpurea <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)- non-native<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/HabichatArchive\/Habichat41.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blazing star <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Liatris<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> sp.) &#8211; native<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Documents\/Habichat50.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wild bergamot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Monarda fistulosa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; native<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/06\/14\/native-plant-profile-mountain-mint-pycnanthemum-spp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mountain mint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pycnanthemum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> sp.) &#8211; native<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/HabichatArchive\/Habichat27.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Goldenrod<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Solidago <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sp.) &#8211; native<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Culver\u2019s root (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Veronicastrum virginicum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; native\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Simply adding these plants is the first step in this process. The next step is to allow the flower stalks to persist through the following spring. Here is a recommended timeline from Satyshur et al. (linked under references):\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Spring:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plant native plants and cut back dead flower stalks varying heights of 8 &#8211; 24 inches. These stalks will provide nesting habitat for female bees.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Female bees will create a pollen ball, lay an egg, and then create a chamber in the stalk. She will repeat this process to the end of the stalk and will seal off the nest.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Summer:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New growth will surround the cut-back stalks and will provide nectar and pollen for other pollinators.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bee larvae will continue to develop on the stem.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Fall and Winter:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leave dead flower stalks standing over the winter. Bees will hibernate in the stems during this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Spring:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cut back dead flower stalks. They will decompose and adult bees will emerge. Consider leaving both in your backyard as bee nesting habitat if it is safe to do so. Adding pithy woody plants, such as elderberry (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sambucus canadensis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), sumac (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rhus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> spp.), and raspberry (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rubus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> spp.,) will also provide habitat for stem-nesting bees.
