The 34-year-old angler caught the 6.0-pound, 20-inch long fish on Sept. 25, while fishing near a shipwreck 14 miles off the coast of Ocean City.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Using both clams and squid for bait, Liddick spent the morning catching sea bass and a couple of smaller gray triggerfish. After a few successful catches, his line took off. The triggerfish struck a clam bait on a two hook top-bottom rig.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere was a solid dead weight,\u201d said Liddick. \u201cThis is a good fish.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Liddick\u2019s catch broke the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/10\/31\/ocean-city-angler-catches-record-gray-triggerfish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">previous record of 5.6 pounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, held for almost a year by Ocean City resident Mike Glyphis.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Staff at the Ocean City Fishing Center certified the weight. A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> biologist verified the species. The state recognizes the gray triggerfish in its Atlantic Division for state records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The department maintains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state records<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for sport fish in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal, and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state record application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
