Schrock caught the record-breaking 5.05-pound fish on Tilghman Island during the Labor Day weekend. The pompano had a fork length &#8212; measured from the tip of the snout or jaw to the end of the middle caudal fin rays, or \u201cfork\u201d &#8212; of 18.5 inches.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While fishing from shore with multiple rods in the Black Walnut Point area, Schrock noticed one rod was taking off. One companion guessed that the fish might be a large bluefish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After nearly a 10-minute fight, Schrock pulled up the catch and quickly called some friends to help identify the fish. \u201cWe had no idea what it was at first,\u201d said Schrock. The pompano was caught using a piece of peeler crab on a traditional Chesapeake two-hook top-bottom rig.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Schrock immediately reached out to the department for verification. Recreational Outreach Coordinator Erik Zlokovitz verified the species as a Florida pompano \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trachinotus carolinus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Its weight was certified by Wittman Wharf Seafood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWow &#8230; I think I need to play the lottery,\u201d Schrock said after his record was confirmed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Schrock\u2019s record Florida pompano breaks the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/07\/25\/easton-angler-sets-maryland-record-for-florida-pompano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">year-old record held by Scott Hartzell Jr.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, whose catch marked the first time the species was recognized in Maryland records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The department maintains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state records<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for sport fish in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal, and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state record application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
