From the shores of Assateague Island to the mountains of Western Maryland, rangers will plant native trees on public lands to mark the occasion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A special <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/trees\/giant.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wye Oak<\/a> seedling &#8212; a descendant of a white oak that lived for centuries in Talbot County &#8212; was planted at <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/southern\/sandypoint.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sandy Point State Park<\/a> near Annapolis by Maryland Park Service Superintendent Nita Settina.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOnce this white oak tree matures, it will support more than 500 species of insects essential to feeding young birds every spring,\u201d said Superintendent Settina. The white oak &#8212; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quercus alba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8212; is Maryland\u2019s state tree, and is found in every county and Baltimore City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> stresses the importance of planting native trees and other plants, which support Maryland\u2019s butterfly, moth, and bird populations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Forest Service<\/a>, trees also provide cost-effective stormwater management, reduce flooding by absorbing and slowing rainfall, limit stream bank erosion, filter pollutants, improve water quality in streams and rivers, improve air quality, reduce energy costs by shading and insulating buildings, and much more. Through various initiatives, the Maryland Forest Service plants millions of trees and seedlings each year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPlanting native trees on our public lands is a perfect way to mark this special Earth Day,\u201d Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio said. \u201cThe most important lesson of the past 50 years is that everyone can make a difference and every contribution, no matter how big or small, is vital to our overall success. Special thanks to our staff and citizens across this state for commemorating Earth Day by enhancing our natural resources and our watersheds!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first Earth Day in 1970 marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement in the United States, sparking the establishment of federal agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency, and the creation of bedrock environmental protection laws that provided the foundation for preserving Maryland\u2019s natural areas, waterways and wildlife, as well as, the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout the spring, Maryland Park Service Rangers are conducting plantings that are documented in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/albums\/72157713999918038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online photo album<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9TpniD4et_s&amp;t=5s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video<\/a>. The Park Service had planned many of this year\u2019s tree planting events to be public, but had to change plans due to safety requirements of the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plantings scheduled or already conducted include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/assateague.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assateague State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Worcester County &#8211; 150 loblolly seedlings were planted and more were also handed out to area students with their lunch pickups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/Bohemia.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bohemia River State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Cecil County &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2,450 native hardwood seedlings planted in partnership with Cecil County Land Use and Development Services to re-establish riparian forest along Great Bohemia Creek.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/deepcreek.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deep Creek Lake State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Garrett County &#8211; 50 trees are being planted .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/gambrill.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gambrill State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Frederick County &#8211; 10 trees being planted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/janesisland.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Janes Island State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Somerset County &#8211; 200 seedlings planted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/martinak.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martinak State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Caroline County &#8211; 300 trees planted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/newgermany.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Germany State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Garrett County &#8211; 500 red spruce trees being planted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/pocomokeriver.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pocomoke River State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> -Worcester County &#8211; 200 seedlings planted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/southern\/pointlookout.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Point Lookout State Park Complex<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, St. Mary\u2019s County- 500 trees planted<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/rockygap.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rocky Gap State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Allegany County &#8211; planting 30 trees from the local high school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/sassafras.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sassafras Natural Resources Management Area<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Kent County &#8211; 75 trees planted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/southern\/stmarysriver.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Mary\u2019s River State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, St. Mary\u2019s County &#8211; 6,000 trees planted in combined effort with DNR Chesapeake and Coastal Service and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/tuckahoe.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tuckahoe State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Caroline County &#8211; 2,625 trees were planted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/washington.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Monument State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Washington County &#8211; 69 trees planted for reforestation of the park entrance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/Wolf-Den-Run.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wolf Den Run State Park<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Garrett County\u00a0 &#8211; 193 seedlings and larger stock trees were planted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marylanders Encouraged to Grow Native Trees and Other Plants The Maryland Park Service is planting more than 10,000 trees in honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22, 2020.
