{"id":30346,"date":"2020-04-01T16:08:28","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T20:08:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=30346"},"modified":"2020-04-04T13:21:34","modified_gmt":"2020-04-04T17:21:34","slug":"environmental-education-month-celebrated-in-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2020\/04\/01\/environmental-education-month-celebrated-in-april\/","title":{"rendered":"Environmental Education Month Celebrated in April"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Supports Hands-on Learning about Nature<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49724950191_e673f99f25.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of girl observing the water\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/>The State of Maryland once again <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/pgc\/Documents\/2020_EE-Month-Proclamation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recognizes April as Environmental Education Month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Maryland, in recognition of public and private efforts to help children experience and learn about their natural world. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year\u2019s proclamation also recognizes this year as the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, which is April 22.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMaryland has established itself as a leader in environmental education both regionally and nationally,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio said. \u201cOutdoor experiences and environmental education are integral parts of a world-class education, prepare our students for a variety of careers, and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although schools are temporarily closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, learning continues in homes and via online resources. During this time, some limited, close-to-home outdoor activity is encouraged as long as everyone practices social distancing and other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/COVID-19-Personal-Spacing-at-Parks.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">safe outdoor practices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rtual and at-home learning opportunities are available from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/baybackpack.com\/blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">B<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ay Backpack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> initiative. These resources are provided by a strong network of Maryland educators who are dedicated to environmental education. They are now adapting their work to keep children connected virtually, and they will continue working with schools upon the return to normal activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Partners in the Maryland Project Green Classrooms Initiative, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">led by the Maryland State Department of Education and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, also continue working together to support schools in meeting academic standards and to achieve Maryland\u2019s Environmental Literacy commitments under the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chesapeakebay.net\/what\/what_guides_us\/watershed_agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maryland Supports Hands-on Learning about Nature The State of Maryland once again recognizes April as Environmental Education Month in Maryland, in recognition of public and private efforts to help children experience and learn about their natural world.
