Photo by Joe Andrucyk, Office of the Governor<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The judging is complete for the annual fifth-grade Arbor Day poster contest sponsored by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Three schools in Maryland that are home to the top winners will benefit with tree plantings this spring. The poster contest is judged annually by a panel of forestry experts and special guest judge, Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lola Lugard of Sykesville, Carroll County was awarded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/49565697006\/in\/album-72157713199803796\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First Place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and her school will receive 15 trees for planting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/49565928212\/in\/album-72157713199803796\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Second Place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with a prize of 10 trees, was awarded to Angela Webb of Easton, Talbot County. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/49565697381\/in\/album-72157713199803796\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Third Place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> honors went to Annelie Kolbe of Hancock, Washington County. Her school will receive five trees.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Every year I look forward to this annual tradition, which shines light on the artistic talent and environmental passion of young Marylanders across our state,&#8221; said First Lady Yumi Hogan, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">who is an accomplished artist and adjunct professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 248px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49565697006_0b3162c2d7.jpg\" alt=\"Drawing of trees in all four seasons\" width=\"238\" height=\"313\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winning entry by Lola Lugard of Carroll County<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The posters were created using varied artistic techniques, including colored pencils, crayons, markers and paint, all illustrating this year\u2019s contest theme, \u201cTrees are Terrific\u2026 in All Four Seasons!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Forest Service accepted hundreds of entries for the 2020 Arbor Day Poster Contest. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Posters are initially judged on a county level and the winners are submitted to the Maryland Urban and Community Forestry Committee to compete at the statewide level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Arbor Day poster contest is hosted by the department\u2019s Tree-Mendous Maryland Program.
