{"id":30109,"date":"2020-02-13T07:55:55","date_gmt":"2020-02-13T12:55:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=30109"},"modified":"2020-02-18T14:52:38","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T19:52:38","slug":"department-builds-fish-habitat-at-cunningham-falls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2020\/02\/13\/department-builds-fish-habitat-at-cunningham-falls\/","title":{"rendered":"Department Builds Fish Habitat at Cunningham Falls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reused Materials Restore Spawning and Feeding Areas<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49525679363_cdcc14029b_b.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of staff deploying fish habitat made from recycled materials\" width=\"355\" height=\"266\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Staff deploy fish habitat made from recycled materials into Hunting Creek Lake.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crews from the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> this winter helped expand fish habitat in <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/cunningham.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cunningham Falls State Park<\/a>\u2019s Hunting Creek Lake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Staff joined with the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/mcc.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Conservation Corps<\/a> to help construct the artificial <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">habitat using upcycling debris and recycled materials found around the park, including PVC tubing, rubber garden hoses, wooden pallets, and five-gallon buckets filled with cement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese habitat structures attract baitfish, which in turn attract larger fish,\u201d Ranger Travis Watts said. \u201cThey can be very productive\u00a0locations for anglers.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last fall, construction crews had to draw down the water level in order to re-grade the lake\u2019s sandy beach area and remove a berm. Once the water levels were reduced, park staff noticed an absence of structure along the edges of the lake which means the fish had no areas to spawn, hide, or feed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49525679383_4e7b563179.jpg\" alt=\"Staff and volunteers construct a fish habitat.\" width=\"299\" height=\"225\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Staff and volunteers construct a fish habitat.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By providing artificial habitat along the perimeter of the lake, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> can ensure that the fish have what they need to thrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Habitat construction and installation is expected to continue into the spring. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These habitats are constructed under the guidance of department fish biologists to assure they are acceptable to this specific use. <strong>The public should never discard materials into state waters.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reused Materials Restore Spawning and Feeding Areas Crews from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources this winter helped expand fish habitat in Cunningham Falls State Park\u2019s Hunting Creek Lake.
