{"id":29986,"date":"2020-01-21T07:00:31","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T12:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=29986"},"modified":"2020-01-21T09:32:34","modified_gmt":"2020-01-21T14:32:34","slug":"black-history-month-at-harriet-tubman-underground-railroad-state-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2020\/01\/21\/black-history-month-at-harriet-tubman-underground-railroad-state-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate Black History Month at Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Weekends in February Offer Inspiring Programs<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2947\/32601731053_72ed6e4730.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of display at Harriet Tubman State Park Visitor Center\" width=\"369\" height=\"246\" \/>In celebration of Black History Month, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/tubman.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> invites everyone to free, family-friendly programs every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in February.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The park, located near Harriet Tubman\u2019s birthplace in Dorchester County, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and houses an exhibit hall, immersive displays, a gift store, and an information desk. Throughout the month, the park\u2019s expert staff known as \u201cTeam Tubman\u201d will lead special programs to honor the life and legacy of the abolitionist and suffragette.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each Friday \u2013 Feb. 7, 14, 21, and 28\u00a0 \u2013 programs will begin at 10 a.m., noon, and 4 p.m. with a ranger-led introduction highlighting the symbolism of the park and visitor center. At 2 p.m., the program, \u201cThe Preponderance of Poverty,\u201d explores the causes of poverty and what can be done about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each Saturday \u2013 Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 \u2013 everyone can join rangers for \u201cMancala! Mancala! Mancala!\u201d at 11 a.m. &#8212; an opportunity to learn the board game that takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master. Visitors can also create their own game board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On two Saturdays &#8212; Feb. 15 and 29 &#8212; the park will feature \u201cRaptors and Reptiles of Dorchester County\u201d at 2 p.m. Since Tubman&#8217;s time in Dorchester County, the landscape has remained relatively unchanged; the department\u2019s Scales &amp; Tales program will offer a lesson on the natural landscape and native wildlife she would have encountered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each Sunday \u2013 Feb. 2, 9, 16, and 23 \u2013\u00a0 \u201cStory Time with Mama Mary,\u201d at 11 a.m. explores the concept of self-liberation through engaging storytelling and self-reflection with Ranger \u201cMama Mary\u201d Dennard. Visitors will enjoy a moment of meditation &#8212; and come away with an awareness of how far society has come since Tubman\u2019s time,\u00a0 and how far we still have to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center, soon to begin its fourth year of operation, has hosted hundreds of thousands of visitors from 70 countries and territories and all 50 states.
