Rosenkilde caught the 22.1-pound fish Dec. 28 in the Atlantic Ocean canyons off the coast of the Delmarva peninsula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rosenkilde and four friends were deep-drop fishing for swordfish and tuna out of Ocean City, about 75 miles offshore, when he knew something took his whole squid bait nearly 1,000 feet below the surface.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe fish started fighting,\u201d the 33-year-old life-long angler said, noting it took nearly 15-20 minutes to reel in the catch. \u201cAt first I thought it was big-eyed tuna, but it had a purple, iridescent color.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rosenkilde said his crewmates knew the species and knew it was exceptionally large. Rosenkilde credits his new record as as a group effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A department biologist verified the species as a big-scale pomfret &#8212; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Taractichthys longipinnis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Its weight was certified by Hunter\u2019s Crab and Seafood Market in Grasonville.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The big-scale pomfret is commonly found in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, but occasionally moves northward.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rosenkilde\u2019s catch could potentially qualify for an all-tackle world record by the International Game Fish Association. The current world record is 20.6 lb, caught Oct. 17, 2004 off St. Augustine, Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The department maintains\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state records<\/a>\u00a0for sport fish in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state record application<\/a>\u00a0and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
