Glyphis caught the 5.6-pound fish Oct. 30 while fishing 16 miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Glyphis said at first he thought his line was snagged on debris. But after a few tugs on his line, he says \u201cthe thing took off.\u201d After a few minutes of fighting the fish, the veteran angler pulled up the gray triggerfish. \u201cThis was something I never expected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The catch broke a record held almost exactly five years by another Ocean City resident, Wayne Gower, who caught his 5.2-pound triggerfish Oct. 31, 2014. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Staff at Martin Fish Co. in Ocean City certified the new record weight. A <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> biologist certified the species. The state recognizes the gray triggerfish in its Atlantic Division for state records.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s always really exciting when these records come in,\u201d Recreational Fishing and Outreach Coordinator Erik Zlokovitz said. \u201cMost of the time anglers aren\u2019t looking to hook a record, it just happens.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The department maintains\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state records<\/a>\u00a0for sport fish in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state record application<\/a>\u00a0and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
