{"id":29333,"date":"2019-10-31T11:00:36","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T15:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=29333"},"modified":"2019-11-06T14:55:17","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T19:55:17","slug":"prescribed-burn-planned-for-dans-mountain-wildlife-management-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/10\/31\/prescribed-burn-planned-for-dans-mountain-wildlife-management-area\/","title":{"rendered":"Prescribed Burn Planned for Dan\u2019s Mountain Wildlife Management Area"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i>Action to Improve Wildlife Habitat, Protect Trees<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/705\/32779540402_6d1a7a9801.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of staff conducting a prescribed burn of dead underbrush\" width=\"373\" height=\"210\" \/>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> plans to conduct a prescribed burn on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/publiclands\/western\/danswma.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dan\u2019s Mountain Wildlife Management Area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> between Nov. 4 and Nov. 21, weather permitting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Access to the east side of the wildlife management area &#8212; at the primitive camping area and at Middle Ridge Road &#8212; will be limited during the burn, but will reopen as soon as the project is complete. The burn will involve a low, controlled flame targeting underbrush and ground cover debris, and smoke is expected to be minimal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The purpose of the burn is to improve habitat for wildlife and to restore a stand of pitch pine and table mountain pine that is more than 90 years old.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe flames will open up the pine cones to provide food for wildlife and help a new generation of seedlings to grow,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Habitat Manager Rick Latshaw said. \u201cNumerous other benefits, such as reduced fuel and improved regeneration of oak, are also goals of the burn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The department\u2019s trained wildland firefighters will be onsite with trucks and other equipment to assure the burn is done safely and efficiently. Adequate fire lines will be established before the burn and signs will be posted along Route 220, in the area of the burn, notifying people of the burn activity. There are no homes or other structures nearby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The prescribed burn will only take place if weather conditions are favorable during the three-week window.
