{"id":29155,"date":"2019-10-23T16:02:14","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T20:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=29155"},"modified":"2019-10-23T16:02:14","modified_gmt":"2019-10-23T20:02:14","slug":"fall-turkey-season-opens-in-western-maryland-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/10\/23\/fall-turkey-season-opens-in-western-maryland-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Fall Turkey Season Opens in Western Maryland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Higher Turkey Population Anticipated This Year<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/46771456525_07a1139446.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of wild turkeys in a field\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> announces that the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/hunt_trap\/WildTurkeyHunting.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fall turkey hunting season<\/a> will open Oct. 26 and continue through Nov. 3 in Allegany, Garrett, and Washington counties with a bag limit of one turkey per hunter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough many hunters are focused on deer this time of year, the fall turkey season can provide an equally exciting and enjoyable opportunity for those who give it a try,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/a> Director Paul Peditto said. \u201cWild turkeys are abundant in the western region, so hunters should have ample opportunity to find a fall bird.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Documents\/wt_observe_survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The 2019 Wild Turkey Observation Survey Summary<\/a> shows that turkey reproduction in western Maryland was at its highest level in three years. Turkey hunters should make note of local food sources when scouting. Turkeys will feed heavily on acorns in areas where they are abundant.
