The 11-pound, 25.25-inch long fish was caught Oct.19 near Baltimore Canyon in the Atlantic Ocean.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After about two hours fishing from his son\u2019s boat for tuna and common dolphin, Whittington saw something unusual in the water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe knew what it was &#8211; we\u2019ve seen small ones all summer but after I pulled that one in I was like, \u2018wow,\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Whittington said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The tripletail can be found from the tropical waters of Florida upward to southern New England in the summer months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Staff of Bahia Marina in Ocean City certified the tripletail\u2019s weight. A <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> biologist certified the species, and the state for the first time recognized the triple tail in its Atlantic Division for state records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhile tripletails aren\u2019t too unusual off the coast of Maryland, the size of this one really creates a great benchmark for a new record catch,\u201d Recreational Fishing and Outreach Coordinator Erik Zlokovitz said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The department maintains\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state records<\/a>\u00a0for sport fish in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state record application<\/a> and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
