{"id":29088,"date":"2019-10-22T10:29:23","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T14:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=29088"},"modified":"2019-10-22T10:29:23","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T14:29:23","slug":"department-certifies-two-new-maryland-clean-marinas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/10\/22\/department-certifies-two-new-maryland-clean-marinas\/","title":{"rendered":"Department Certifies Two New Maryland Clean Marinas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Facilities in Calvert and Queen Anne\u2019s Counties Meet Standards<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48941326398_d0d0bb5f2e.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Kent Narrows Boatel\" width=\"351\" height=\"264\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boatel on Kent Narrows, Queen Anne&#8217;s County<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two facilities recently passed inspection by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019 voluntary <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Boating\/Pages\/cleanmarina\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clean Marina<\/a> program, earning the Maryland Clean Marina Award. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/solomonslandingmd.pilera.com\/page\/marina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Solomons Landing Marina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentnarrowsboatel.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Kent Narrows Boatel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> met the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/boating\/Documents\/checklist.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">award criteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, bringing the total number of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/boating\/Pages\/cleanmarina\/cleanmarinas.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clean Marinas and Clean Marina Partners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to 147. This is roughly a quarter of the marinas in Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Department staff evaluate participating marinas or yacht clubs on areas such as emergency preparedness, waste containment\/disposal, and stormwater management. To pass, the marina must score from 75 \u2013 85% in each area of the<\/span> a<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ward checklis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t by implementing practices from the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/boating\/Pages\/cleanmarina\/cmprogram.aspx#guidebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Clean Marina Guidebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48941327128_d9da23b0c8.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of the marina committee at Solomons Landing Condominium\" width=\"320\" height=\"241\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The marina committee at Solomons Landing Condominium receives a Maryland Clean Marina certificate.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of their environmental initiatives, the community of Solomons Landing installed fuel spill response kits, started sharing environmental education materials with slip holders, and developed clarified marina rules. Kent Narrows Boatel assembled safety data sheets for hazardous materials, established a boat-washing area, and improved staff training. Clean Marinas are re-inspected every three years to ensure they continue to meet the standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The program was developed in 1998 by a committee comprised of marina and boatyard operators, state and local government officials, academics, and boating groups with the goal of reducing nonpoint source pollution from marine facilities and recreational boats.
