Oaks are beginning to join in the dance as they start to turn golden brown to deep purplish tones.<\/p>\n<p>The Autumn Glory Festival is happening the rest of the week and throughout the weekend. For list of events and links to fall foliage driving tours visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitdeepcreek.com\/52nd-annual-autumn-glory-festival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the festival&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_28952\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28952\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28952\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/100919_MelissaNash_NewGermany.png\" alt=\"Western Maryland 4-H Center, Swanton\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Western Maryland 4-H Center, Swanton, Photo by Melissa Nash<\/p><\/div> <div id=\"attachment_28951\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28951\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28951\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/100919_DCLSP_MelissaCarson-3.png\" alt=\"Cherry Creek Trail at Deep Creek Lake State Park\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cherry Creek Trail at Deep Creek Lake State Park, Photo by Melissa Carlson<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/deepcreek.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deep Creek Lake State Park<\/a>, rainy weather the past few days has stripped the most vibrant leaves off of the trees, leaving the deciduous understory looking slightly barren, according to Maryland Park Service Associate Melissa Carson. &#8220;You can clearly see the next round of changing leaves from the Cherry Creek Trail at Deep Creek Lake State Park as the peppered pink hues peek through the canopy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This year\u2019s fall colors in Garrett County are undoubtedly more brilliant than last season,&#8221; says Ranger Adam Stachowiak, assistant manager of <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/herrington.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Herrington Manor<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/swallowfalls.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swallow Falls<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/Wolf-Den-Run.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wolf Den Run<\/a> state parks. &#8220;Many leaves have already begun falling, however the maples and hickories are still producing eye pleasing color changes. Get in the woods and enjoy it before it is too late!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sean Nolan, assistant manager of <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/publiclands\/western_savageriverforest.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Savage River State Forest<\/a>, says &#8220;much of the mid-canopy and understory trees &#8212; birch, striped maple, sassafras, blackgum &#8212; are all in full color. Some of the large red maple and sugar maple are starting to turn, but definitely not full color yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has certainly been a different kind of fall,&#8221; remarks Luke Mongrain, assistant manager of <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/newgermany.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Germany State Park<\/a>. &#8220;It seems there is still a good amount of green or the leaves have already fallen.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ranger Bob Study reports similar conditions at <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/fortfrederick.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fort Frederick State Park<\/a>. &#8220;Unfortunately the few trees that have changed color have turned brown due to the drought and warm weather. Some of the pines are also turning brown and losing their needles.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Allegany County remains at 40% color change, quite similar to last week, according to Allegany Project Forester Dan Hedderick.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28956\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28956\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28956\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/100919_AdamStachowiak-2_HMSP-1.png\" alt=\"Herrington Manor State Park\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Herrington Manor State Park, photo by Adam Stachowiak<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We have been in the clouds with the rain,&#8221; says Aaron Cook, forester based in Clear Spring. &#8220;The rain brought down leaves that had changed, but hickories are changing to golden brown and then quickly brown.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ranger Mary Ironside, park manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/southmountain.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Mountain Recreation Area<\/a> in Washington County, notes very little change in the foliage.<\/p>\n<p>Frederick County leaves are just beginning to change, according to Ranger Mark Spurrier, manager of <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/cunningham.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cunningham Falls<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/gambrill.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gambrill<\/a> state parks.<\/p>\n<p>In Baltimore County, <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/patapsco.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patapsco Valley State Park<\/a> is beginning to experience color changes, says Ranger Felicia Graves.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28947\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28947\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28947\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/100919-NGSP_LukeMongrain.png\" alt=\"New Germany State Park\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New Germany State Park, photo by Luke Mongrain<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Diana Marsteller, naturalist at <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/fairhill.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area<\/a> in Cecil County, says her area still seeing mostly green, but a bit more yellow on walnuts and hickories, and even some red on a few maples. &#8220;The colder temps this week will hopefully lead to some deeper hues by the weekend,&#8221; she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The dogwood leaves in Kent and Queen Anne&#8217;s counties are turning burgundy and many are full of red berries,&#8221; according to Maryland Forest Service Upper Shore Project Manager Teri Batchelor. She adds that black walnut trees have dropped many of their nuts and what few leaves are left are yellow\/green in color, while red maple hybrids such as October Glory or Red Sunset are showing 60% of their orange\/red colors. Many of the oaks still have their leaves although what they have are turning brown. &#8220;While white oaks are having limited acorns, the sawtooth oaks are producing lots and lots of acorns for 2019,&#8221; Batchelor says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28949\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28949\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28949\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/100919-Avalon-PVSP-2-FeliciaGraves.png\" alt=\"Avalon Area of Patapsco Valley State Park\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28949\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Avalon Area of Patapsco Valley State Park, photo by Felicia Graves<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Maryland Forest Service Lower Shore Project Manager Rob Clarke advises that Worcester County sweetgum trees are changing rapidly but losing their leaves almost as fast as they change color. &#8220;Wind has taken its toll on leaves the past few days. Maples are starting to turn, but there&#8217;s not much other color to report at this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Colors are just starting to change in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/chesapeakeforestlands.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wicomico Demonstration Forest<\/a>, with some leaf fall due to lack of water,&#8221; notes Katherine Kronner, forest ranger based in Parsonsburg.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/assateague.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assateague State Park<\/a> Manager Angela Baldwin remarked that there is just a touch of yellow so far on Maryland&#8217;s easternmost shore.<\/p>\n<p>Anne Arundel County Project Forester Justin Arseneault indicates there is not a lot of color change in the area yet. &#8220;Some understory trees like flowering dogwood and eastern redbud are beginning to show signs of yellow and red, but green remains the dominant color for now &#8212; I think we will still see some color in another week or two.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Calvert and Prince George&#8217;s Counties are starting to see some minor leaf drop from the poplars, gums and some maples. Those species are still turning, however the oaks have not caught up yet and are still 70% to 85% green, said Brian Stupak of the Maryland Forest Service.<\/p>\n<p>Leonardtown-based regional forester David Gailey reports there&#8217;s not much color south of Annapolis. &#8220;Some of the Yellow Poplars are turning yellow and a few dogwoods and oaks are turning more brown versus red. The annual Autumn Glory Festival is a five-day celebration that began Wednesday and runs through Sunday offering a wide variety of activities indoors and outdoors to celebrate the beauty of the local fall foliage. Travel &amp; Leisure named Oakland &#8220;America\u2019s Best Town for Fall Colors,&#8221; and with good reason. Celebrate Mother Nature\u2019s gorgeous foliage surrounding Deep Creek Lake with parades, a farmers market, concerts, antiques and crafts shows, and a car show.<\/p>\n<p>Washington County is also hosting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hagerstownmd.org\/1123\/Harvest-Hoedown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hagerstown Harvest Hoedown<\/a> on Saturday from noon \u2013 4 p.m. at Fairgrounds Park.
