Peak should be expected in 1-2 weeks for most of the county.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-28731\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/SangRunFallFestival.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of kids painting pumpkins\" width=\"237\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/SangRunFallFestival.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/SangRunFallFestival-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 237px) 100vw, 237px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pumpkin harvesting and carving, scarecrow making, apple pressing, hayrides, Dutch oven cooking, and much more are coming to the Fall Festival at Friends Store in <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/sangrun.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sang Run State Park<\/a> this Saturday from 10 a.m. &#8211; 3 p.m. Ranger Roy Musselwhite suggests that anyone planning to attend and coming from the east should not miss a drive along New Germany Road. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the most colorful roads in the county right now. Several maple and hickory trees are kicking off the fall color season with bright red, yellow, and orange.\u201d He says they really seem to &#8220;pop&#8221; when surrounded by trees with green leaves that are still a week or two from changing colors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dan Hedderick, project forester based in Flintstone, recently drove across Allegany County noting that along Interstate 68 there is a 30% color change with various shades of yellow and patches of brown, and just a little touch of red in a few places.\u00a0 &#8220;Dry conditions are bringing about leaf drop in all areas,&#8221; he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28727\" style=\"width: 326px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28727\" class=\"wp-image-28727 \" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/RGSP_CamgroundLoop-JuliaMusslewhite.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Rocky Gap State Park Campground loop\" width=\"316\" height=\"238\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rocky Gap State Park campground loop, photo by Julia Musselwhite<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf September is any indication, then we are in store for a beautiful array of colors this season,\u201d says Rocky Gap State Park Assistant Manager Julia Musselwhite. \u201cThe leaves have already begun to change and fall and the best place to feel immersed in the change of seasons is in our campground.\u00a0 Warm days and chilly nights make the perfect setting for outdoor adventures and cozy nights by the campfire.\u00a0 Camping reservations are still accepted in some camp loops through the end of October.\u00a0 Boat rentals and swimming areas are also available while the weather and water conditions remain pleasant. Call the park at 240-357-4404 for the most up-to-date information.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Cook, forester based in Clear Spring, reports that Washington County is experiencing a very dry late summer, in stark contrast to last season. \u201cThe stress created by dry weather correlates with premature leaf drop (and some color change) in many of the trees typically associated with early fall season color.\u201d Aaron notes that walnuts, cherries, sycamores, sumacs, locust, grape, and Virginia creeper vines are all changing leaf color with almost immediate leaf drop.\u00a0 \u201cMany of the oaks along the summits are turning bronze or rust color, a trend that could result in peak foliage arriving sooner this fall, and without variation in typical autumn hues. You can join up and engage in militia drills and learn about the roles of the militia and life during the French and Indian War at <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/fortfrederick.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fort Frederick State Park<\/a>. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Park entrance fees apply.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visithagerstown.com\/events\/20516\/13723\/45th-annual-smithsburg-steam-engine-and-craft-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The 45th Annual Smithsburg Steam Engine and Craft Show<\/a> will be held Saturday 10 a.m. \u2013 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. \u2013 4 p.m. at the Smithsburg Fire Hall grounds in Washington County. Steam and gas engines, antique tractors, and farm equipment, a working saw mill, a flea market, and food and craft vendors are among the highlights, with a parade at 5 p.m. on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday from 10 a.m \u2013 5 p.m., the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.middletownheritagefestival.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Middletown Heritage Festival <\/a>\u00a0in Frederick County will hold its 35th celebration! The day starts with the Heritage Parade\u00a0 at 10 a.m. and continues with great food, music, historical events, children\u2019s activities, and vendors of all kinds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bring your family and friends to Tuckahoe&#8217;s Challenge Course\u00a0 Saturday from 11 a.m. &#8211; 2 p.m. for a Family Fun Day at <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/tuckahoe.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tuckahoe State Park<\/a>. Enjoy the 40-ft. rock wall, tube net, zip line, 50-foot giant swing, and 25-foot pamper pole. For ages 7 and up who fit into a harness. Close-toed shoes and pre-registration required.<\/p>\n<p>Round out your day on Saturday evening in Somerset County.
