{"id":28338,"date":"2019-09-06T13:00:15","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T17:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=28338"},"modified":"2019-09-06T14:46:22","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T18:46:22","slug":"various-events-commemorate-battle-of-south-mountain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/09\/06\/various-events-commemorate-battle-of-south-mountain\/","title":{"rendered":"Various Events Commemorate Battle of South Mountain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Campaign of 1862 Lives Again This Weekend<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/South-Mountain-Battlefield-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-28353 \" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/South-Mountain-Battlefield-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/South-Mountain-Battlefield-1.jpg 960w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/South-Mountain-Battlefield-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/South-Mountain-Battlefield-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visitors to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/southmountainbattlefield.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">South Mountain State Battlefield<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> can help commemorate the 157th anniversary of the Civil War <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/SouthMountainBattlefield\/Maryland-Campaign.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">battle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that occurred there, with a series of battlefield hikes, tours, and living-history events Sept. 7-8.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On both days, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., guests can experience \u201cFury at Fox\u2019s Gap,\u201d where interpreters, representing both Union and Confederate regiments who fought in the Battle of South Mountain at Fox\u2019s Gap, will be onsite near the Reno Monument. They will conduct infantry drill and firing demonstrations and highlight soldiers accounts of the battle.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Saturday at 11 a.m., \u201cThe Artillerists Art\u201d program will detail how Civil War artillery personnel practiced their craft. Guests should meet at the upper parking lot at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/washington.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Washington Monument State Park<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At 1 p.m., visitors can join author and local historian Steven R. Stotelmyer for a hike around the battlefield area. Hikers will visit the monuments dedicated to the men who fought here, including two devoted generals killed during the battle: Union Major General Jesse Reno and Confederate Brigadier General Samuel Garland. Guests will meet at Fox\u2019s Gap on Reno Monument Road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At 7 p.m., Stotelmyer will discuss his book \u201cToo Useful to Sacrifice,\u201d taking a fresh look at primary sources to re-examine the Maryland Campaign from a military perspective, revisiting the historical account of controversial Gen. George B. McClellan\u2019s accomplishments. Guests meet at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/greenbrier.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Greenbrier State Park<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> visitors center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Sunday at 10 a.m., visitors can meet at the upper parking lot at Washington Monument State Park for a two-hour driving tour of the battlefield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is no age limit, but participants should be advised there will be opportunities for moderate level hikes and walks, along with standing for extended periods of time.\u00a0 Youth participants should be supervised by a parent or guardian. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Participants should plan and dress accordingly for the weather. Suggested items to bring for the day are comfortable clothing, water, snacks, insect repellent, and sunscreen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More information is available by calling Ranger Michael Burditt at 301-791-4767.
