Kristy Frashure was participating in the Poor Girls Fishing Tournament in Ocean City on Aug. 16 when she caught the 74.5-pound fish.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Frashure and five other friends were fishing off Poor Man\u2019s Canyon when the record fish struck the line. \u201cIt took nearly 20-30 minutes to reel in \u2026 it felt like an eternity,\u201d Frashure said. She knew it was a big fish but didn\u2019t know it was a record-breaker. \u201cWe were taking bets on how much it weighed.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> biologist identified the species as common dolphinfish &#8212; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coryphaena hippurus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8212; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and its official weight was certified by Bahia Marina.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Frashure\u2019s catch has dethroned Jeff Wright\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/07\/30\/cambridge-angler-reels-in-record-mahi-near-ocean-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three-week-old state Atlantic Division record<\/a> for common dolphinfish, which was 72.8 pounds. The previous record had been held since 1985.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The department maintains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state records<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for sport fish in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state record application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and call 410-260-8324 or 443-569-1398.
