Hartzell caught the 3.375-pound fish on Stone Rock near Tilghman Island.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hartzell was trolling for bait fish with family and friends when he caught the fish on a gold Clarkspoon &#8212; at the end of few tangled fishing lines.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe weren\u2019t sure what it was,\u201d said Scott Hartzell Sr., the angler\u2019s father. \u201cWe\u2019ve caught crazy fish before but never this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Hartzells took a few pictures of the fish, sent them to some friends for identification and were notified of their rare catch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A department biologist verified the species as a Florida pompano \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trachinotus carolinus. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Its weight was certified at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/oxford\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cooperative Oxford Laboratory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The fish is commonly found in the warm waters off the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico but occasionally moves northward.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had a few reports of Florida pompano being caught in the bay recently and expect to see more,\u201d Recreational Fishing Outreach Coordinator Erik Zlokovitz said. \u201cWe think it\u2019s time for the state to recognize this species as a record catch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hartzell&#8217;s Florida pompano record is in the Chesapeake Division. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The department maintains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state records<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for sport fish in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state record application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
