{"id":27942,"date":"2019-07-16T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=27942"},"modified":"2019-07-15T16:52:35","modified_gmt":"2019-07-15T20:52:35","slug":"peak-bloom-arrives-at-mckee-beshers-sunflower-fields","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/07\/16\/peak-bloom-arrives-at-mckee-beshers-sunflower-fields\/","title":{"rendered":"Peak Bloom Arrives at McKee-Beshers Sunflower Fields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fields Planted Statewide for Wildlife Benefit<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1780\/29935887288_3573679175.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of sunflower field at McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area\" width=\"351\" height=\"264\" \/>The sunflower fields at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/publiclands\/central\/mckeebeshers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Poolesville are now in \u201cpeak bloom,\u201d with about 30 acres planted in three fields, providing a spectacular view and serving an important conservation purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Montgomery County area is just one of many sunflower fields the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> plants each spring as a food source, primarily for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/plants_wildlife\/Mourning_Dove.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mourning doves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as part of the department\u2019s\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/publiclands\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">conservation and management programs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Mourning doves are hunted at the fields during the traditional fall season, which runs Sept. 1 through early January.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The blooming sunflowers flowers additionally nourish pollinators, songbirds, and other wildlife. They are also a frequent subject for entries in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/photocontest.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">department\u2019s photo contest, which ends Aug. 31<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visiting and photographing the spectacular sight is welcomed, but visitors are reminded that <\/span><b>damaging, disturbing, or picking the sunflowers is strictly prohibited. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Citizens may not cut, remove, or trample the flowers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sightseers should also be advised that, while the wildlife management area is open to the public, there are no amenities such as garbage cans, restrooms, shelters, or tables. Visitors must pack out any trash and take it with them. Additionally, anyone visiting these fields should protect themselves from the elements, namely mosquitoes, poison ivy, ticks, and \u2013 of course \u2013 the sun.
