{"id":27498,"date":"2019-05-15T11:45:32","date_gmt":"2019-05-15T15:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=27498"},"modified":"2019-05-15T12:15:05","modified_gmt":"2019-05-15T16:15:05","slug":"marylands-regular-striped-bass-season-opens-may-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/05\/15\/marylands-regular-striped-bass-season-opens-may-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland\u2019s Regular Striped Bass Season Opens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">State Expands Conservation Message and Outreach<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/46940013755_bbc01f1393.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of various types of hooks\" width=\"351\" height=\"181\" \/>Maryland\u2019s regular striped bass season gets underway on May 16, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> reminds anglers that conservation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/05\/14\/new-striped-bass-regulations-effective-may-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">regulations put in place last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are in effect through the end of 2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When fishing in the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries, anglers must use non-offset <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/recreational\/circle_hooks.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">circle hooks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> when live-lining or chumming, and must use circle hooks or \u201cJ\u201d hooks when using fish, crabs, worms, or processed baits.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The minimum size striped bass that may be kept is 19 inches. Catch limits are two fish per day between 19-28 inches, or one fish between 19-28 inches and one fish over 28 inches.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With these regulations, Maryland took the lead last year in addressing the most pressing problem facing the Chesapeake Bay\u2019s striper population: the significant volume of \u201cdead discards\u201d in the recreational fishery, where many striped bass are caught and released, but do not survive when they are returned to the water.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese regulations were designed to address the shared concerns of anglers, charters and conservationists who reported high mortality rates of sublegal rockfish,\u201d Fishing and Boating Services Monitoring and Assessment Director Michael Luisi said. &#8220;The public input from these stakeholders along with our best available science helped us establish an early effort to curb this mortality.&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Department of Natural Resources further encourages all anglers to do their part by implementing voluntary conservation measures, including handling fish more carefully and reducing the number of fish they catch and later release. The department has several recommendations and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/recreational\/circle_hooks.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, including new videos, available online for easy reference.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Key recommendations are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use larger circle hooks in the 8\/0 \u2013 9\/0 size range <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep fish in water when unhooking <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When releasing striped bass, minimize handling and get the fish in the water as fast as possible <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Minimize heat stress by avoiding fishing days when air temperatures are above 95 degrees <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have appropriate de-hooking hardware on hand <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep hands wet to help fish maintain their protective slime layer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anglers can also help department scientists by providing their catch information to the state\u2019s striped bass <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/striped-bass\/SB_survey.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">volunteer angler survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This data helps the Maryland Department of Natural Resources characterize recreational striped bass catch and harvest. The department relies on this information to manage striped bass to keep this species thriving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland will continue to make conservation decisions based on the best available science for the long-term future of striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay.
