{"id":27462,"date":"2019-05-10T12:34:17","date_gmt":"2019-05-10T16:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=27462"},"modified":"2019-05-10T16:28:46","modified_gmt":"2019-05-10T20:28:46","slug":"maryland-receives-1-million-for-coastal-resiliency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/05\/10\/maryland-receives-1-million-for-coastal-resiliency\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Receives $1 Million For Coastal Resiliency \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Restoring Wetlands for Communities and Wildlife<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/fwslogotrans.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-27465\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/fwslogotrans-251x300.png\" alt=\"Logo of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\" width=\"350\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/fwslogotrans-251x300.png 251w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/fwslogotrans.png 754w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>, partnering with the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center, a $1 million National Coastal Wetlands Conservation grant to implement coastal resiliency enhancements at the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge and the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The project will benefit Chesapeake Bay water quality through restoration of coastal wetlands and creation of oyster reefs enhancements at Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center in Queen Anne\u2019s County, and at Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Kent County.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHard-bottom reefs, nearshore habitats, and coastal wetlands are fundamental to the survival and proliferation of numerous types of fish and benthic organisms,\u201d said Michael Malpezzi, artificial reef coordinator for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. \u201cThis makes them vitally important to the fisheries of Maryland and to our citizens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coastal wetlands include both salt marshes of estuaries and freshwater wetlands that extend inland within the coastal drainages. They provide crucial habitat, including breeding grounds, nurseries, along with shelter and food for fish, birds, and other wildlife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThrough the installation of living shorelines, we will slow the loss of ecologically valuable saltmarsh and protect coastal wetland habitats, including extensive submerged aquatic vegetation beds. The project aims to create nearshore oyster reef habitat, and enhance wetland habitat by improving water control on various freshwater wetland impoundments,\u201d noted Vicki Paulas, assistant director and restoration manager for the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWaterfowl, fish, and other aquatic species depend on coastal habitats for foraging and breeding,\u201d said Genevieve LaRouche, Field Supervisor of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\u2019s Chesapeake Bay Field Office. \u201cCoastal wetlands are also essential to the nation\u2019s economy by boosting coastal resilience, reducing flooding risks, stabilizing shorelines, and protecting natural ecosystems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In recognition of the role wetlands play, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has funded $20.5 million to projects in 14 coastal states through the National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant Program.
