{"id":27182,"date":"2019-04-24T11:00:30","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T15:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=27182"},"modified":"2020-10-21T16:31:26","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T20:31:26","slug":"rural-legacy-program-reaches-milestone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/04\/24\/rural-legacy-program-reaches-milestone\/","title":{"rendered":"Rural Legacy Program Reaches Milestone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">100,000 Acres Conserved Over 20 Years<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-27187\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/BPW-RLA-100k-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Board of Public Works meeting in Governor's office\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/BPW-RLA-100k-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/BPW-RLA-100k-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/BPW-RLA-100k-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>With the Board of Public Works\u2019 approval of five new conservation easements, Maryland\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Pages\/RuralLegacy\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rural Legacy Program<\/a> has now conserved more than 100,000 acres of land throughout the state. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In presenting the properties for approval, <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Natural Resources<\/a> Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio observed that this year marks the 20th Anniversary of Maryland\u2019s first Rural Legacy Program acquisition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have successfully worked with local partners, farmers and other landowners to conserve and maintain the rural character of our state for future generations,\u201d Secretary Riccio said. \u201cAnd with your approval of the items on our real property agenda today, which includes five Rural Legacy projects totaling 795 acres, we will exceed 100,000 acres protected under this incredible state program.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The program \u00a0provides funding for large tracts of land to enhance the protection of our natural resources while supporting natural resource-based industries like agriculture and forestry. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The program was enacted by the Maryland General Assembly in 1997, and the first Rural Legacy conservation easement was acquired in the fiscal year 1998-1999 grant cycle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Among guests on hand was former Governor Parris Glendening, whose administration launched the Rural Legacy Program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Secretary Riccio also thanked the members of the Board of Public Works &#8212; Governor Larry Hogan, Comptroller Peter Franchot and Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp &#8212; for their support through the years. Governor Hogan has fully funded land conservation and preservation programs. This has resulted in more than $55 million in Rural Legacy projects being approved by the Board of Public Works to protect more than 18,000 acres during Governor Hogan\u2019s administration to date.
