{"id":26770,"date":"2019-04-09T10:57:09","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T14:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=26770"},"modified":"2019-04-09T10:57:09","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T14:57:09","slug":"free-trees-for-somerset-and-worcester-county-backyard-buffers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/04\/09\/free-trees-for-somerset-and-worcester-county-backyard-buffers\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Trees for Somerset and Worcester County Backyard Buffers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Order Deadline is April 26<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1924\/45567259512_2d6afb47bf.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of colorful trees in Pocomoke River\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> is offering free tree seedlings to landowners in Somerset and Worcester counties who have a creek, drainage ditch, stream or other waterway on or near their property through the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programs\/Backyard-Buffer-Program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Backyard Buffers<\/a>\u00a0program.<span id=\"more-26555\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Trees and shrubs planted along waterways help improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients, lowering peak water temperatures, reducing sediment and stabilizing stream banks.<\/p>\n<p>Each bag contains approximately 25 native bare-root tree and shrub seedlings, including bald cypress, river birch, serviceberry, spicebush and winterberry.<!--more--><span id=\"more-26465\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-26460\"><\/span>Maryland Forest Service staff will provide information on tree maintenance and planting techniques, in addition to suggestions of other suitable native species at the time of pickup.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Quantities are limited so reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Order deadline is April 26.<\/p>\n<p>Somerset County landowners should call 410-651-2004 to order. Pickup will be 10 a.m. to noon April 27 at the University of Maryland Extension Office, 30730 Park Drive, Princess Anne.<\/p>\n<p>Worcester County landowners should call 410-641-4314 to order.
